The Bearded Collie Club of Scotland Open Show – Saturday 5th March 2022 Judge: Laura Jay (Talraz) I would like to thank the committee and members for allowing me the privilege of judging at this, my second breed club open show, you all made me feel so welcome. Thank you also to my super steward Dick for keeping the ring running smoothly and the paperwork in order. I was delighted with the quality of the entry;all dogs were well presented with excellent temperaments. I did feel some dogs didn’t move as well in the indoor setting as they may have done with more space outside which did affect some placings on the day.I thoroughly enjoyed the appointment and had some difficult decisions to make. DOGS: SPECIAL VINTAGE DOG (0) VETERAN DOG (2,1) 1st - Glasgow’s J.B. De Chester at Gallus (IMP FRA) 7-year-old blue dog shown in excellent coat and condition. He has a strong, masculine head with broad flat skull and eyes toning to coat colour, good reach of neck leading to well laid back shoulders with matching return of upper arm, excellent forechest, good depth and shape of rib but would prefer it a touch longer, he moved around the ring smoothly taking long supple strides. MINOR PUPPY DOG (1,1) PUPPY DOG (3,1) 1st - Jemmett’s Braemoor’s Bounding Out For Westbere (IMP NLD) I was very taken with this 10 month old dark slate boy. He has a super head with large dark eyes giving a melting expression, he is very well constructed throughout with correct croup and tail set, he moved steadily and accurately, I will watch his future with interest. 2nd - Kelly’s Allachoy Sound of Harris 9-month-old dark slate who was giving his handler a hard time making him difficult to assess today. He is a good size and presents a nice outline standing, has agood length of rib and is well muscled for his age, I saw glimpses of very good movement so with some more schooling he should hold his own in any company. JUNIOR DOG (4) 1st - Ayrton’s Aoibh Drummer Boy Super head and expression on this 13-month-old slate boy with a big black nose and large dark eyes, excellent length of rib, correct croup and tail set, his coat is doing him no favours at the moment but that will come in time, it is on the move where he really impresses, he covers the ground with long effortless strides, so light on his feet and accurate away and back which won him the class. 2nd - Handley’s Bargemon Brigadoon At Barkenbear Impressive 13-month-old dark slate male who looked my winner on standing, he too has a super head, he is well constructed with good bone, appealing for his masculinity, just couldn’t match the effortless movement of 1 today, one I felt would be better assessed outside. 3rd - Gault’s Osmart Tzara’s Midnite Jazz Again a lovely expression on this 12-month-old slate, he presented a nice outline on standing with lovely length to height proportions but was very unsettled on the move, never really getting into his stride and rather fond of his tail today. YEARLING DOG (2) 1st - Ayrton’s Aoibh Drummer Boy 2nd - Handley’s Bargemon Brigadoon At Barkenbear MAIDEN DOG (2) 1st - Jemmett’s Braemoor’s Bounding Out For Westbrere (IMP NLD) 2nd - Gault’s Osmart Tzara’s Midnite Jazz NOVICE DOG (1) 1st - Gault’s Osmart Tzara’s Midnite Jazz DEBUTANT DOG (1) 1st - Gault’s Osmart Tzara’s Midnite Jazz UNDERGRADUATE DOG (1) 1st - Buchanan-Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Cherokee I found a lot to like about this very raw almost 2 year old male, totally out of coat today but that just meant I could see how well constructed he is. He has a super head with good pigment and a lovely dark eye giving a melting expression, ok rib, strong topline, excellent croup and tail set. What a super mover, light and effortless taking long easy strides with his tail carried low. GRADUATE DOG (5) This was a difficult class to split with differing types and levels of maturity, places could have easily changed on another day. 1st - Peart’s Kilfinan Mister Moonlight For Talluarchy This understated 3 year old slate appealed for his breed type, lovely size and length coming from rib, good head with dark eye and excellent pigment, correct croup and tail set, excellent mover, so light on his feet holding his topline and with correct tail carriage, his coat is not yet fully mature but what he has is close fitting and of excellent harsh texture, pleased to award him RBD. 2nd - Buchan-Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Cherokee 3rd - Ryan’s Dychix Invictus For Razkal Lots to like about this masculine 2 year old dark slate, lovely size and substance, excellent shape and length of rib, well angulated front and rear, nice harsh coat coming through, just couldn’t match the effortless movement of 1 & 2 today, felt he would go better outside with more space to get into his stride. POST GRADUATE DOG (2) 1st - Kuz’s Duncannas Special Edition at Strufingill JW 3 ½ year old dark slate, not the biggest boy but still masculine, well made all through with correct front and rear angulation and low set hocks, good croup and tail set, lovely harsh coat coming through but more attention to presentation would enhance, he won this class on his sound effortless movement from all angles showing excellent reach and drive. 2nd - Goodbrand’s Braesnobel Looney Tunes Beautiful head and expression on this 3-year-old mid slate, lovely reach of neck and good forechest, good shape and length of rib, so well presented and handled to get the best from him, just preferred the rear movement of 1 today. MID LIMIT DOG (0) LIMIT DOG (1) 1st - Costello’s Bradiba’s Brilliant Nutmeg Muffin at Calkylona Elegant 5-year-old brown in full coat of good texture, strong masculine head with broad skull, strong muzzle and eyes toning to his coat colour, lovely length of neck into well laid-back shoulder, good length of rib, liked his overall size and substance, free and easy mover. OPEN DOG (2) 1st - Robertson’s Arranbrae Laird of Quothquan JW One I have done well before and now at 5 ½ years he is mature in body and coat fulfilling his early promise. He has a super head with dark eyes and nicely arched eyebrows giving a melting expression, excellent length of rib and correct angulation front and rear, he moved effortlessly, so light on his feet, I had no hesitation in awarding him best dog, he just seemed to lose his enthusiasm in the BIS challenge. 2nd - Gibb’s Snikkles Bluebeard at Pirateer JW ShCM ShCEx Another who has matured well since I last judged him, now 6 years old and in super coat and condition with good muscle tone, excellent head with eye toning to his blue coat, masculine all through he presents a lovely outline standing, just preferred the movement of 1 today. BITCHES: SPECIAL VINTAGE BITCH (2,1) 1st - Robertson’s Kiltondale Liadhich With Quothquan ShCM One of my old favourites who sadly wasn’t in her best coat today but there is still no denying her quality, she is lovely to go over and is in super fit condition for her 10 years, still holding her topline well and moving out like a youngster, certainly enjoying her time in the ring today. VETERAN BITCH (5,2) 1st - Buchanan-Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Mine Alone Hard to believe this ultra-feminine slate is 9 years old, she has an excellent head with a beautiful expression coming from large dark eyes and nicely arched eyebrows, excellent front and rear angulation with neat low set hocks, she is in fantastic condition with super muscle tone enabling her to power around the ring reminding me of her father to take the class and ultimately BVIS 2nd - Savage & McLean’s Clovabrae Solar Flair ShCM 8 year old slate who again is in super condition and not looking her age, she has a correctly proportioned head with typical expression, she presents a nice outline standing holding a strong topline, moved out very well. 3rd - Glasgow’s Ch Gallus Fortune Cookie ShCM An old favourite of mine who is a very deserved champion, so well-constructed and still in super condition, sadly not able to show me her best movement today so had to settle for 3rd place. MINOR PUPPY BITCH (1) 1st - Goodbrand’s Braesnobel Rum N’Raisin What a little sweetheart this 7-month-old slate is, so well-schooled and attentive to her handler. Her head is developing well with correct bite and large dark eyes giving such a sweet expression, good length of neck and correct ribcage, she still has some growing to do but at this stage her front and rear angulation is balanced enabling her to move smoothly with a free an easy action, she has a bright future ahead I’m sure, loved her. PUPPY BITCH (4) What a lovely class of promising puppies. 1st - Salter’s Irisaddition Love Actually Eye-catching 11-month-old dark slate presented and handled beautifully. She has a well-proportioned feminine head with large dark eyes and a lovely soft expression with just a hint of mischief. She presents an impressive outline standing with good length of body coming from rib and a strong topline. I feel she has done all her growing early so just needs to drop into herself as she matures but even at this stage she moved out with long free strides so couldn’t be denied the class and eventually BPIS 2nd - Goodbrand’s Braesnobel Rum N’Raisin 3rd - MacDougall’s Clanmac’s Hey There Delilah Excellent head on this 10-month-old brown girl, lovely broad flat skull, good stop, and eye colour toning to coat, balanced angulation front and rear with good length of rib and short loin, rather full of fun today so not showing me her best movement but she has lots of potential. JUNIOR BITCH (2) 1st - Higgins’ Allachoy Isle of Neave 9-month-old dark slate of lovely breed type, 4th in the strong puppy class she has some maturing to do in body, but she has a balanced head with correct bite and good pigment, nice reach of neck, good length of rib and correctly angulated croup with low set tail, moved steadily holding a nice outline. 2nd - McKelvie’s Thingamebob Perfect Pickle 12-month-old brown bitch in lovely coat and condition, good length to height proportions with a nice flow over her neck and shoulders, good shape and length of rib, a little flat in croup at this stage of her development and preferred the tail set and carriage of 1. YEARLING BITCH (1) 1st - Robertson’s Heather Mist Miss Tillietudlem at Quothquan (IMP SWE) 23-month-old brown who is going through the coat change with her adult coat coming through a lovely deep brown colour of harsh texture. She has a good head and expression, lovely length of neck flowing on to well laid-back shoulders, good return of upper arm, correct shape and length of rib cage, shown in super fit condition with well developed second thigh she moved accurately out and back with a lovely action so light on her feet. Stood alone today but deserving of her place. MAIDEN BITCH (1) 1st - Salter’s Irisaddition Love Actually NOVICE BITCH (2) 1st - Salter’s Irisaddition Love Actually 2nd - McKelvie’s Thingamebob Perfect Pickle DEBUTANT BITCH (1) 1st - Salter’s Irisaddition Love Actually UNDERGRADUATE BITCH (0) GRADUATE BITCH (2) 1st - Ayrton’s Aoibh Firey Flamenco JW So much to like about this 3-year-old slate, she has a strong yet feminine head with good stop, well arched eyebrows and large dark eyes giving a true Beardie expression. She looks super free standing, you can see how correctly made and balanced she is, always holding a nice outline with strong top line while allowing her to show me her outgoing temperament. Spot on length to height proportions and covered in a lovely harsh fitted jacket, a free and easy mover when she settled, just lost out on maturity in the challenge but her day will come. 2nd - Kuz’s Kiltondale Memphis Belle At Strufingill 2 year old mid slate with a good head, feminine expression with eye colour toning to coat, well angulated front with good depth of chest, she just had a tendency to lose her topline today and wasn’t as forward going as 1 on the move, I felt she would show better outside. POST GRADUATE BITCH (2) 1st - Glasgow’s Malandex Xpat’s Gem At Gallus JW What a pleasure to judge this 3 year old slate bitch, for me there is nothing I would change about her. She has a strong yet feminine head with a broad flat skull, strong muzzle with correct bite, good stop and large dark eyes giving her a beautiful expression. Her neck is well arched and leads smoothly to well laid-back shoulders with a matching return of upper arm and good forechest. Her ribcage is deep, long and well-sprung with a short strong loin. Rear angulation matches the front with well let down hocks enabling her to move around the ring with excellent reach and drive, when she opened up on the long straights I couldn’t fail to be impressed, delighted to award her best bitch and BIS. 2nd - Ballantyne’s Bustroc Rosebud 4-year-old dark slate bitch, again with a lovely head, nice reach of neck and well laid back shoulders. She presents a pleasing outline on the stand and is in excellent coat and condition, but she couldn’t match the effortless movement of 1 today. MID LIMIT BITCH (2) 1st - Muir’s Douglasdale Dream Island 5-year-old brown bitch in beautiful coat and condition. Excellent head with broad flat skull, strong muzzle, large eyes that tone with her coat giving a melting expression, lovely length of neck with slight arch, correct front angulation and rear to matchwith low hocks, I felt she didn’t move as well as her conformation suggested today. 2nd - Cook’s Arranbrae Spanish Eyes 5-year-old slate bitch who is nicely made and shown in fit conditionbut again didn’t show me her best movement today. Liked her stronger topline but preferred the length to height proportions and coat finish of 1. LIMIT BITCH (4) 1st - Johnston’s Corimist Fashion Star I was delighted to get my hands on this immaculately presented dark slate bitch with ideal length to height proportions. She is very mature in body and coat for her 2 ½ years, head not yet as strong as some but it is feminine and balanced with a soft expression, good reach of neck with slight arch, excellent depth of chest with well sprung ribcage of very good length, well angulated front and rear to match, she moved so well, free and effortless with correct tail carriage, unobtrusively handled to get the best of her, I was pleased to award her RBB & RBIS 2nd - Goodbrand’s Kiltondale Isn’t She Lovely For Braesnobel 5 year old mid slate who was unlucky to meet 1 in such good form as she too has a lot of appealing qualities, super head with good stop and large eyes giving an appealing expression, lovely reach of neck and flow over her well laid back shoulders, well made all through and moved well, I just preferred the over all length to height proportions of 1. 3rd - Muir’s Douglasdale Dream Island OPEN BITCH (4) 1st - Gill & Hosie’s Malandex French Xpectation for Gillaber This 5 year old flashy slate instantly caught my eye, she is in fantastic coat and condition and was presented to perfection. She has an excellent head with broad flat skull, strong muzzle and large dark eyes giving a melting expression. She is lovely to go over, strongly made yet feminine with a good depth of chest and well sprung rib, balanced angulation front and rear, moved well. 2nd - Ayrton’s Aoibh Skylark Lots to like about this 5 year old slate, more old fashioned in type and slower with her coat she could easily be overlooked but she is very well constructed and balanced, with a good head and ideal body proportions, lovely free and easy mover maintaining a strong topline at all times. 3rd - Goodbrand’s Braesnobel Let Freedom Ring Another very nice 5 year old bitch with a lot of appealing qualities, still working on getting her figure back from her recent litter which I felt affected hertopline today, but she has a good length of rib, correct angulation front and rear with nice low hocks and moved smoothly with good tail carriage.
