Bearded Collie Club of Scotland Open Show - Saturday 25th June 2022
Judge: Nicola Whelan (Corimist)

Thank you to the Committee for inviting me to judge such a super entry of beardies and providing an exceptional standard of hospitality. Heartfelt thanks to my supportive and well organised stewards, Dick & Don, for their assistance and to all exhibitors for bringing their beardies along for me to judge on the day. Overall, I found the majority of beardies fit for function; constructed to do day’s work. Temperaments were as the breed standard demands with only one that concerned me overall. Presentation and coat care overall, was excellent. I was surprised to find that quite a few exhibits were in much need of a tooth scale and a consistent teeth cleaning routine. We often read in critiques concerns around the lack of front angulation, which is important as there’s nothing nicer than watching a beardie reach out in front. However, it needs to be balanced with the correct rear angulation – to give the adequate drive from behind to propel the dog forward and create that smooth, long reaching, effortless movement. Let us not lose sight of both in our breeding plans. Overall, I was extremely pleased with my class and main winners, whom to me, were typical to breed type with the super ring presence I was looking for.

DOGS:

SPECIAL VINTAGE DOG – (no entries)

VETERAN DOG - 3 (0)
1st - Gamble’s Talraz Look to the Future at Capelaw ShCM
Dark slate with a super outline on the stand. Not disappointed in going over him. Masculine head, with typical beardie expression, dark eye and pigment and good bite. Excellent front assembly, shoulders well laid back with good upper arm, depth of chest and length of rib. Good rear angulation. A very well-balanced boy. He moved out with purpose, covering the ground with good reach and drive. BVD
2nd - Glasgow’s JB De Chester at Gallus (Imp Fra)
Super blue boy, another masculine boy of the type I like. Super head, eye colour and expression. Correct coat texture. Really like his front assembly and his length to height proportions. He has the correct length and depth of rib and is balanced on the stand with good rear angles. However, he does tend to drop his topline which can spoil his outline.
3rd - Handley’s Invercoyle Caperdonich at Barkenbear
Blue boy, slightly taller in build than 1 & 2. Another with a strong masculine head, good pigment and eye colour. Very good coat colour and texture. Liked his length to height proportions. Preferred front and rear angulations of 1 & 2.

MINOR PUPPY DOG – (no entries)

PUPPY DOG - 1 (0)
1st - Cox’s Braesnobel Salt N’Pepper
10 month old slate & white dog. This puppy shows lots of promise at this stage. Lovely head, dark eye and expression. Good upper arm and shoulder, which allowed him to move out in front when he settled. Good hindquarters. Really liked his type, still needs to come up on leg, which I’m sure he will do as he matures. I believe this is the first time in the ring for handler/dog and I would encourage them to continue to train and learn. I’m sure there’s a lot of fun to be had for this duo! Looking forward to watching his career with interest. BPD

JUNIOR DOG - 5 (1)
All the boys in this class were very boisterous today making it a fun task for their owners. This meant that it was hard to assess movement in most cases.

1st - Handley’s Bargemon Brigadoon at Barkenbear JW
Well schooled slate & white boy of 17 months. Masculine boy liked his size and his profile on the stand. Good head, eye and typical beardie expression. He still needs to develop on in forechest, good length of neck with adequate lay back of shoulder, nice upper arm. Correct depth and length of rib. He has good front reach but could have been more positive in rear action on the move today. Super temperament.
2nd - Jemmett’s Braemoor’s Bounding out for Westbere (Imp Nld)
14 month old boy certainly made his handler work today. Full of character, showing lots of personality and I’m sure he will settle down as he matures. Liked his head, expression and eye, good bite. Pleasing front, nice deep chest and length of rib. Out to have fun in the sun so hard to assess his movement but the glimpses I did see, showed me his correct movement which you would expect his construction to enable.
3rd - Gault’s Osmart Tzara’s Midnite Jazz
16 month old slate boy. Another out to enjoy his day. This boy needs time to mature in head and body. Not a big boy and finer in type than 1 & 2. Difficult to assess movement as quite exuberant but sure he will settle in time. Looking forward to seeing him as he matures on.

YEARLING DOG - 4 (1)
1st - Handley’s Bargemon Bridgadoon at Barkenbear JW
2nd - Gault’s Osmart Tzara’s Midnite Jazz
3rd - Kelly’s Allachoy Sound of Harris
13 month’s dark slate. Quite a head strong boy who needs some schooling. Difficult to go over him and I hope the grumbling at his owner, which trying to correct, is a stage he will pass – certainly something to watch. Good head with lovely dark eye and expression. Would prefer a slightly better shoulder placement, pleasing length of rib and back end angulation. Didn’t move with much reach and drive on the day.

MAIDEN DOG – (no entries)

NOVICE DOG - 3 (0)
1st - Cox’s Braesnobel Salt N’ Pepper
2nd - Gault’s Osmart Tzara’s Midnite Jazz
3rd - Kelly’s Allachoy Sound of Harris

DEBUTANT DOG - 2 (0)
1st - Rudd’s Lubin’s London Calling
2 year old dark slate with such a happy disposition. Excellent pigment, lovely dark eye giving the true beardie expression I was looking for. Strong head and jaw. Deep chest with adequate shoulder placement and good upper arm, which enabled good front reach on the move. In very good condition with well-muscled hindquarters. Could be a little more positive on the move. Overall, an honest boy with lots to like.
2nd - Gault’s Osmart Tzara’s Midnite Jazz

UNDERGRADUATE DOG - 3 (0)
1st - Buchanan-Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Cherokee
2 year old slate boy who hasn’t completely matured, so still needs some time. Loved his strong head, strong muzzle and jaw, dark eye and melting expression. He needs to mature in forechest, lovely depth and length of rib with a strong loin. Coat needs to come but what he has is of a very good textured. A dog that could do a day’s work who moved out with both purpose and drive.
2nd - Rudd’s Lubin’s London Calling
3rd - Walker’s Allachoy Dances with Wolves
3 year old slate well up on size. Super strong head and muzzle. Good bite, eye and pigment. In good coat condition. Correct length to height ratio, strong topline, mature in body. Would prefer a better length of neck and lay back of shoulder. Couldn’t match the movement of 1 & 2 on the day.

GRADUATE DOG - 4 (0)
1st - Ryan’s Dychix Invictus for Razkal
Not a flashy boy but he presents a lovely clean profile on the stand, which commands attention. Super head, eye and expression and correct bite. Good depth of chest with excellent rib length and shape. Well angulated hindquarters. Would prefer a slightly better lay back of shoulder to assist his front action on the move but still lots to like. Very well handled.
2nd - Buchanan-Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Cherokee
3rd - Kirby’s Finesk The Dancing Master
Slate and white who is well up on size. Coat needs to come but what is there is of good texture. Strong head, eye toning with coat. Good depth of chest and good length of neck leading into well laid back shoulders. Good rib length and liked his overall length to height proportions. Moved okay.

POST GRADUATE DOG - 4 (0)
1st - Gill & Hosie’s Burnhock Superior Diamond for Gillaber
Masculine brown boy who has matured a lot since the last time I saw him. Liked him for his overall type. Excellent head proportions, good eye colour and pigment. My preference would be for him to have a little more reach of neck. Still needs time to develop in front. Really liked his depth of chest and length of rib, with good short strong loin. He moved around the ring with a lovely long reach and drive, at one with his handler.
2nd - Peart’s Kilfinan Mister Moonlight for Talluarchy
Mature, plain slate boy. Another with a strong masculine head, excellent pigment and eye colour. Liked his overall proportions. Hands on I found a mature dog, good depth of chest, strong forechest, excellent length of rib and strong topline. Nice, angulated rear. Just preferred the overall type, length of upper arm and shoulder placement of 1.
3rd - Goodbrand’s Braesnobel Looney Tunes
Another mature slate and white boy. Lots to like about this boy. Super head and expression. Liked his length of neck and length of upper arm. Strong topline, good rib length. Would prefer a slightly more rounded croup. Moved out well.

LIMIT DOG - 2 (0)
1st - Costello’s Bradiba’s Brilliant Nutmeg Muffin at Calkylona (Imp Deu)
I’ve recently seen this boy in the ring and he’s taken my eye. He’s not a big boy but he is masculine all the same. Brown boy who is mature in coat. Lots to like – super shape and on closer inspection everything where it should be to allow him to move out with a ground covering and economical action. Super head, eye and pigment colour. Lovely temperament and in good condition. RBD
2nd - Savage & McLean’s Talraz Comic Relief at Canaich JW
Another masculine, plain slate boy. Lots to like, good head, eye colour and pigment. Would prefer slightly more neck to finish off his outline and preferred shoulder placement of 1. Excellent height to length proports, mature in body with good length of rib. Moved out with a good length of stride. Very well handled and presented.

OPEN DOG - 2 (0)
1st - Delaney’s Ch Arranbrae Muy Guapo JW
Masculine slate and white boy. A worthy champion. Super head, strong jaw and bite. Nice pigment. Super depth of chest, rib length, strong topline. Excellent hindquarter angulation. Quite a laidback boy, who took a little bit to get going but the more he went the better he got. Powered around the ring with a fabulous length of stride. BD & RBIS.
2nd - Robertson’s Arranbrae Laird of Quothquan JW
Litter brother to 1. Dark slate with a lot of the same qualities as his brother. Narrower in frame than 1. Excellent length to height proportions, strong top line and well balanced. Again, another with a super length of stride.

BITCHES

SPECIAL VINTAGE BITCH - 3 (1)
1st - Robertson’s Kiltondale Liadhich with Quothquan ShCM
11 year old dark slate. This girl doesn’t look and move much differently than she did in her prime. Credit to her owners who have kept her in such sound condition. So feminine but strong in type. Loved her length to height proportions, her topline could put some, half her age to shame! She has the loveliest dark eye given such a sweet, knowing expression. She thoroughly enjoyed her day and moved with such a light action, covering the ground with ease. Loved her and couldn’t deny her BSV and BVIS.
2nd - Delaney’s Arranbrae Just One Look JW
11 year old slate. Another in such good coat and condition for her age. Different in type than 1, slightly heavier in build. Such a sweet head and expression. Moved out well.

VETERAN BITCH - 5 (1)
1st - Savage & McLean’s Clovabrae Solar Flair ShCM
8 year old who belies her age, she could still compete with some of the younger girls. In good hard condition which shows in her strength of topline and positive, free movement. Lovely head and expression and pleasing proportions. Really nice length of stride on the move. BVB & BV.
2nd - Rudd’s Jolie Fille Des Emeraudes Du Lac Avec Lubin (Imp Fra)
8 year old dark slate. Lovely type with the loveliest head, eye and expression. Nice to go over, balanced throughout with good length and depth of rib. Floated around the ring with her handler.
3rd - Buchanan- Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Mine Alone
9 year old slate. Beautiful head and expression, dark eye and pigment. In great coat condition of excellent texture. Balanced throughout although could drop her topline on the stand. Her movement belies her age – fore and aft angulation allows her to move out which she did and could still go all day, I’m sure!

MINOR PUPPY BITCH - 1 (0)
1st - Glasgow’s Basnikova Muza Od Plzenskeho Lotra at Gallus (Imp Cze)
Pretty 8 months plain brown girl full of promise. She holds a super shape, understated but very stylish. Everything where it should be for her age. Lovely head proportions, eye and pigment colour, with a melting expression. Pleasing front and rear angulation, good chest, length and shape of rib. Shoulders okay, correct length of upper arm. So well-schooled for her age, moved out with a fabulous length of stride, excellent reach and drive for her age. She’s a picture on the stand. I’m sure she must have a promising career ahead of her. BPB & BPIS.

PUPPY BITCH - 3 (1)
1st - Glasgow’s Basnikova Muza Od Plzenskeho Lotra at Gallus (Imp Cze)
2nd - Goodbrand’s Braesnobel Rum N’Raisin
9 month old plain slate feminine bitch. Finer in type then 1 and still needs to come up on leg to give her a more balanced height to length ratio – she has time on her side. Feminine head, melting expression with good pigment. Very steady mover for her age which should only get better as she matures on.

JUNIOR BITCH - 3 (1)
1st - Goodbrand’s Braesnobel Rum N’Raisin
2nd - McKelvie’s Thingamebob Perfect Pickle
16 month feminine brown girl who is going through the pale stage of her coat colour right now. Super temperament and sympathetically handled by her owner. Liked her head, eye and pigment colour. Could have a better lay back of shoulder. Good height to length proportions and well angulated rear. Shown in good condition. Another who was enjoying her day but pleased to see she settled as the day went on. Needs to mature on in body another with time on her side. Unfortunately, today couldn’t compare to 1 on the move.

YEARLING BITCH - 2 (1)
1st - McKelvie’s Thingamebob Perfect Pickle

MAIDEN BITCH - 2 (0)
1st - Glasgow’s Basnikova Muza Od Plzenskeho Lotra at Gallus (Imp Cze)
2nd - McKelvie’s Thingamebob Perfect Pickle

NOVICE BITCH - 1 (0)
1st - McKelvie’s Thingamebob Perfect Pickle

DEBUTANT BITCH (1 entry – 1 absent)

UNDERGRADUATE BITCH - 1 (0)
1st - Kirby’s Finesk Bratach Bana
3 year old slate. Loved her head, dark eyes giving a typical beardie expression. Pigment could have been stronger. Mature in body, deep chest and nice length of rib. Good length to height proportions. Slightly straight in shoulder and would prefer better rear angulation. Moved okay.

GRADUATE BITCH - 4 (1)
1st - Kuz’s Kiltondale Memphis Belle at Strufingill
2 year old slate liked her overall type and proportions. Going through a coat change but what she has is of good quality. Lovely head and appealing expression, with good eye and pigment colour. Mature in body with good deep chest, depth and length of rib and strong loin. She can tend to look bum high on the stand and this should not be mistaken for a weak topline, which she does not have. Handler should just be aware of how she can pull in her back feet. She comes into her own on the move, with long effortless strides, light of foot – she could go all day. Loved her and will watch her show career with interest. Pleased to award her RBB in nice competition.
2nd - Ayrton’s Aoibh Fiery Flamenco JW
3 year slate and white bitch. Lovely profile on the stand. Super head and expression with dark pigment and eye colour to match, giving that melting beardie expression. Particularly liked her proportions albeit slight taller than 1 she was very well balanced. Her close fitting coat showed off her outline. She particularly had good rear angulation which she used well on the move. Preferred the lay back of shoulder and upper arm angulation of 1.
3rd - Gamble’s Talraz By Firelight to Capelaw
5 year old dark slate, who carries a finer frame than 1 & 2. My preference would be a stronger head, however, she has pleasing strong pigment and eye colour. Excellent front angulation balanced out with sound rear proportions, which she uses on the move to give an effortless action. Tended to drop her topline a touch and is slightly lacking in condition, but I believe she’s recently raised a large litter, so sure this is only temporary.

POST GRADUATE BITCH - 2 (0)
1st - Ballantyne’s Bustroc Rosebud
4 year old dark slate glamourous girl. Super head, exceptional eye and pigment colour. Good reach of neck, well arched, mature in forechest and depth and length of rib. Strong topline and rear angulation.Steady mover.
2nd - Jemmett’s Philemon Keltic Magic for Westbere (Imp Deu)
4 year old plain slate girl. Heavier build than 1. Super head, eye, and pigment with good strength of jaw and bite. Super coat of correct texture. Liked her proportions and she can move out really well but just carrying a few extra pounds on the day.

LIMIT BITCH - 3 (1)
1st - Glasgow’s Malandex Xpat’s Gem at Gallus JW
4 year old slate and white girl. Such a stylish girl and today she was on top form. She’s lovely to go over, her head is correct with good eye and pigment. Correct bite. Mature in body, with good forechest, depth, shape and length of rib. She particularly has good front angulation, coupled with sound rear angulation, which allows her to power around the ring with an air of femininity. She attracts attention and was a standout winner today. Delighted to award her BB and later BIS. I’m sure her title isn’t far away!
2nd - Muir’s Douglasdale Dream Island
6 year old of the richest brown. She’s another with lots to like. Super head and excellent pigment and eye colour. Correct bite. Liked her overall proportions. Not as positive as 1 on the move and tended to drop her topline a little.

OPEN BITCH - 5 (1)
1st - Muir’s Douglasdale Dream Island
2nd - Goodbrand’s Braesnobel Let Freedom Ring
5 year old dark slate of appealing type. Lovely head and eye with melting expression. Would prefer a better lay back of shoulder and reach of neck, however, she has a good length of upper arm which showed as she moved out around the ring. Excellent hindquarter angulation.
3rd - Ayrton’s Aoibh Skylark
6 year old slate. Slightly bigger build than 1 & 2. Good length to height proportions. Typical head and expression, with very good eye colour giving a melting expression. Good front and rear angulation. Just couldn’t match the movement of first 2 on the day.

SPECIAL WORKING DOG OR BITCH – (no entries)

SPECIAL CHAMPIONS CLASS - 3 (2)
1st - Delaney’s Ch Arranbrae Muy Guapo JW

BRACE - 1 (0)
1st - Rudd’s Brace (10,28)
Mother and son brace. Similar in type, both have lovely head proportions and eye and pigment colour. Absolutely gorgeous temperaments on both. Both powered around the ring, complementing each other in unison with their handler.

PROGENY - 1 (0)
1st - Delaney’s Ch Arranbrae Muy Guapo JW and sons.
All masculine boys of similar type. Particularly liked their strength of head and muzzle. Sound temperaments and good proportions overall.
