Bearded Collie Club Of Scotland Championship Show – 1st October 2023 Judge: Mrs Denise Barley (Runival) Best in Show: CH POTTERDALE PRECIOUS ROSE Reserve Best in Show: KILFINAN MISTER MOONLIGHT FOR TALLUARCHY Best Puppy in Show: ORORA’S HIMSELF Best Veteran in Show: TALRAZ NUTS IN MAY VW After several years away from the show ring, it was a delight to get back among top-quality beardies, and I thank the BCCS membership for their votes to allow me this privilege. Many thanks also to the hard-working committee for a happy and well-run show, and to my two attentive stewards, Alan Hosie and Lyn Armour. As I don’t intend to continue judging after this, it was lovely to get my hands on a lot of really nice dogs for the last time. The current trend of very low entries in the younger classes is a worry, but not confined to our breed. Numbers are still high in the older age bands, and there were classes, especially the lovely adult bitch classes, where I had to let Beardies I liked very much leave the ring cardless, which I’m always sad about. Decisions were often close and sometimes dogs slipped down the line for minor reasons like they didn’t have the sparkle on the move that others showed; or they carried more leg furnishings than I like; or in bitches they were larger than I like: or their handlers scuppered their chances by overstretching their necks on the stand or by encouraging high head carriage on the move. Looking at this entry generally, the breed remains well endowed with sound, reachy movers with lovely heads, good mouths and good quality coats. Pigmentation just isn’t an issue these days. There were a couple of narrow knobbly skulls, a few slightly weak rears, and only one questionable mouth. There were less really barrelled ribs than I remember previously but some slightly rounded and shallow, and therefore coarse at the withers. Movement was consistently good with very few exceptions; the majority of fronts and rears were sound and well made. However, several dogs had very long loins – and I mean VERY, not just a bit long in the coupling which tends to be in the eye of the beholder anyway. The length of back required by the Standard shouldn’t come from an expanse of nothingness between the last rib and the pelvis, no matter how nice it looks from the ringside. DOGS: Dog CC: KILFINAN MISTER MOONLIGHT FOR TALLUARCHY Res Dog CC: Multi CH CORIMIST THE SUN KING Minor Puppy Dog (4 entries) Abs:0 1st - Mrs B Harcourt-Brown ORORA’S HIMSELF Eye-catching 7mth dark brown, full of quality. Lovely shoulder angulation and well-set withers, good length and depth of rib, and a strong well-formed rear. He moved confidently with long, balanced strides and simply couldn’t be ignored. BPIS. 2nd - Mrs S Brown HIGHGLADE REASON TO BELIEVE (a.i.) Masculine slate just 6 months, with a super head and expression. Good length of body coming from his ribs. Moved out well but I preferred the rear action of 1. Still a baby – he should do very well as he settles. 3rd - Mrs D Glasspool COOL HEART’S FINEST SELECTION FOR GILDENMEDE (imp Swe) 7 ½ mth dark slate with a handsome head and lovely shoulders. Good length of back. Extended well both ends butunsettled in rear movement in this class. He excels in skull shape and shoulder construction, with well set withers and croup, and a strong rear. He perhaps needs to be given his head more on the move to show his forward reach. He’s a big dog who will always be impressive and currently carrying a full junior coat which was immaculately presented. Yearling Dog (2 Entries) Abs: 0 1st - Mr D Moir WINARIA WELLINGTON JW Well-presented slate boy going through his coat change just now. Handsome head and good pigmentation. Excellent lay of shoulder and forward reach, correct length of body. Balanced, free and sound on the move. Good depth and length of rib. 2nd - Mrs C A Johnson BEABEARDIES X’FACTOR FOR WILDAN Masculine slate, also in the middle of his coat change. Strong, handsome head. Very well laid shoulders, good extension front and rear but needs to be allowed to go at his proper pace to show it well. Ribs deep enough, but I preferred the length of 1. Novice Dog (4 Entries) Abs: 1 1st - Mrs S Brown HIGHGLADE REASON TO BELIEVE (a.i.) 2nd - Mrs D Glasspool COO L HEART’S FINEST SELECTION FOR GILDENMEDE (imp Swe) 3rd - Ms S Gibb & Mrs M Dungavell DEBBEACOL DEVIL IN DISGUISE Appealing slate youngster who has a lot of promise. Warm eye, good head, deep ribs. Hewas unsettled on the move in his first class, but concentrated on the task better here, showing good forward reach and a sound rear. Graduate Dog (3 Entries) Abs: 1 1st - Ms J Cox BRAESNOBEL SALT N’PEPPER Slate with a really good head shape, lovely reach of neck from well laid shoulders, firm topline, well angulated rear. Well-shaped ribs but I’d like them longer. 2nd - Miss V J Rudd LUBIN LONDON’S CALLING Eye-catching black with super head, well laid shoulders and a lovely long ribcage. Tended to dip in the middle today. Post Graduate Dog (3 Entries) Abs: 1 1st - Mrs E Ayrton AOIBH DRUMMER BOY JW Really goodstrongly-made slate who will do extremely well once he’s grown more length of coat under the body. So well constructed all through. Good length of rib and strong topline. Powered round the ring with great reach and drive, totally sound and balanced. 2nd - Mrs C Ryan DYCHIX INVICTUS FOR RAZKAL Appealing old-fashioned slate with handsome head and good topline coming from well laid shoulders balanced by a correct croup and strong rear. Deep ribs. Moved out well, always sound. Mid Limit Dog (6 entries) Abs: 3 1st - Miss E J & Mrs J A Peart KILFINAN MISTER MOONLIGHT FOR TALLUARCHY I viewed this dog with delight when he came into the ring as he typified everything that had first attracted me to the breed: old-fashioned, moderately coated, all male and yet graceful and lithe. Everything about him was just what I wanted - lovely expression and strong skull, excellent construction and topline, lovely reach of neck, good length of upper arm and shoulder layback, super rib/loin balance and well set croup and hocks. He powered round the ring effortlessly. Such a lovely Beardie. CC and RBIS. 2nd - Ms P Buchanan-Hislop CIOPAR CELTIC CHEROKEE Very dark slate with a handsome, typical head, well laid shoulders and sound, balanced movement. 3rd - Mrs A & Mr G Pedder SAINT LAURENT DE CHESTER AT CALDERMIST (imp Fra) Well presented dark slate with a well-laid front and good length of rib. I preferred the heads and rear movement of the first two. Limit Dog (11 entries) Abs: 4 1st - Mr K & Mrs B Handley BARGEMON BRIGADOON AT BARKENBEAR JW High quality slate who is hard to fault – everything about him impresses, and he was on my shortlist for the CC. He has a strong, masculine head with a lovely warm eye, good length of neck leading into well angulated front, strong topline, excellent length and depth of rib, impressive muscle and sound expansive movement. Just coming into maturity now, and next year should be a very good one for him. 2nd - Mrs A Gill & Mr A Hosie BURNHOCK SUPERIOR DIAMOND FOR GILLABER Also a very good quality dog, brown this time. Little to choose between him and 1 in construction – this lad is also well angulated, well-ribbed, sound and strongly made. Profuse coat. He lost out on the stand - his neck and topline looked a lot better when free standing afterwards in the lineup than when stacked and held in the class. 3rd - Dr S SAVAGE & Mr D Mclean TALRAZ COMIC RELIEF AT CANAICH JW Dark slate boy, another really nice one. Excelled in head, eye, front and movement. I preferred the rib/loin balance of the first two. Open Dog (10 Entries) Abs: 3 1st - Miss M Strzelczyk MULTI CH CORIMIST THE SUN KING (exp) Easy to see why this slate boy is a multi-champion.Underneath the glamour and faultless presentation is an outstandingly well-structured dog. The long, elegant sweep of neck flows into super shoulders, a strong topline and well-set croup. His rib cage is long, deep and perfectly shaped, the loin just as it should be. The rear assembly is equally good, with correct stifle angulation and low, strong hocks, all adding up to produce balanced, powerful movement covering plenty of ground with great style and fluency. This kennel had achieved an admirable consistency of type and quality in recent years, and this boy is a good example. I wished I had another CC to give him. Res CC. 2nd - Mrs J Goodbrand BRAESNOBEL LOONEY TUNES SHCEX A handsome slate with really nice layback of shoulder, strong topline and good length and depth of rib. Good forward reach, sound pushy rear. 3rd - Mr & Mrs M & Miss L Jay CH FARMARENS DRUMS OF SPRING AT TALRAZ JW (imp Swe) Another really nice slate – I was spoiled for choice in this class. He has a very handsome head, good front and rear angulation, long strong topline, sound and free movement. His heavy coat was immaculately presented. Lovely reach of neck, super shoulders, lovely length which is all ribcage, well set rear. Time has robbed her of her topline and, true to form, nothing was going to make her go at full speed round the ring. Bless her. |
