Bearded Collie Club Of Scotland Championship Show – 5th October 2024

Best in Show: Ch Potterdale Precious Rose
Reserve Best in Show: Potterdale Gorgeous George
Best Puppy in Show: Valkyrie De Chester At Tamjenta (Imp. Fra)
Best Veteran in Show: Ch Snowmead Shades Of Grey JW

First, I should like to extend my thanks to the Committee and members for providing me with the opportunity to judge our beautiful breed at your Championship Show. Second, I should like to express my appreciation of the excellent work done by my two stewards, Lyn and Dick who managed things so smoothly.

On the whole I was pleased with the quality of the exhibits especially those in both challenges where I was often spoilt for choice and my main winners who, from my ring perspective, all moved out extremely well. Heads were generally very good as was dentition. But I feel that on the move there was often a lack of proper front extension something that has become quite common in recent years. Hocks were longer than they ideally should be in quite a number of cases. Also, I felt some exhibits were not quite long enough in their overall balance with height and there were a number who were overweight which for me is a cardinal sin for a breed which is meant to be lean and active.

DOGS:

Dog CC: Potterdale Gorgeous George
Res. Dog CC: Ungaro De Chester [ATCBB45234FRA]
BPD: Strufingill Maverick At Barkenbear
BVD: Ch Snowmead Shades Of Gray JW

Minor Puppy Dog 2 (1)
1st - Mrs B & Mr K Handley’s Strufingill Maverick At Barkenbear
Very dark boy with matching eye and lovely soft expression. Good head proportions, decent shoulder, length of rib and depth of chest lovely length of tail. Moved out well on his own.

Puppy Dog 2 (1)
1st - Mrs B & Mr K Handley’s Strufingill Maverick At Barkenbear
See 1st in Minor Puppy Dog

Junior Dog 1 (0)
1st - Mrs R Salter’s Whole Lotta Love From Noonie Bears By Irisaddition (IMP BEL)
Masculine head of correct proportion, dark eye, good layback of shoulder, nice depth of chest, good fore-chest and good length of rib. Correct height to length ratio and moved out freely with purpose.

Yearling Dog 4 (1)
1st - Messrs Bernardi, Clerc and Cousson’s Ungaro De Chester [ATCBB45234FRA]
This boy was my find of the day and I believe it was his first show in this country and I feel sure he will go on to great things. Lovely outline and held his top-line throughout. Lovely easy flowing movement coming from excellent overall confirmation. Well laidback shoulder good upper arm and so balanced front and rear. Strong head and muzzle of correct proportions, good fore-chest. Today he created such a lovely picture both standing and moving to just pip my second place. In the challenge he excelled again. RDCC
2nd - Mrs B Harcourt-Brown’s Orora’s Himself
Lovely brown boy who gave me one of my hardest decisions of the day but it was just the overall picture of one that made the difference on the day. Lovely masculine head, eye matching coat, well laid-back shoulders, deep chest and length of rib, good fore-chest, proper 5:4 proportion. Moved out well and maintained his top line throughout and so well presented.
3rd - Ms S Gibb and Mrs M Dungavell’s Debbeacol Devil In Disguise At Pirateer
A bit unlucky to come up against two outstanding exhibits at the top of their game. Perhaps not as long as I should ideally like but has a good head with eye matching coat, decent lay back of shoulder, good depth of chest. Just not the flowing movement of 1 and 2 today.

Graduate Dog 2 (2)

Post Graduate Dog 4 (0)
1st - Miss K Bramley and Mr K Moore‘s Coalacre Do The Hokey Cokey
Lovely outline coming from correct proportions and overall sound construction. Strong masculine head nice arch of neck into well laid-back shoulders good depth of chest and strong fore-chest. Flowed around ring holding top line at all times.
2nd - Miss S E Butcher’s Sylvabrae Newtons Law
What a lovely picture both standing and moving so correctly. It was a tight decision between 1st and 2nd. Well set-up front assembly, matched by correctly angled rear, strong fore-chest, lovely strong head without coarseness. Moved out so well and one to look out for in the future.
3rd - Mr D Moir’s Winaria Wellington JW
A little bit smaller than 1 and 2 but of correct proportions. Good fore-chest, head of correct proportions, lovely expression, good lay back of shoulder and length of upper arm. His strength comes from his movement as he moved out nicely but just preferred the overall picture of 1 and 2.

Mid Limit Dog 3 (1)
1st - Mrs C Ryan’s Dychix Invictus For Razkal ShCEx
Dark slate, sound head with lovely dark eyes, good lay back of shoulder, decent depth of chest and length of rib. Good length to height. Moved out well.
2nd - Mrs E M Ayrton’s Aoibh drummer Boy JW
Different type to one but over-all of sound construction, strong head of correct proportions and lovely expression, strong fore-chest, angles balanced front and rear. Good top line. Also, moved out well.

Limit Dog 4 (1)
1st - Mrs D Skinner’s Tamjenta Bendelacreme
Lovely expression and strong masculine head, nicely arched neck into well angulated shoulders, good length of upper arm, good depth of chest, long rib, well-muscled rear with correct angulation leading to an overall picture of balance and strength. Lovely free movement which won him the class
2nd - Mrs B and Mr K Handley’s Bargemon Brigadoon at Barkenbear JW
At the start I must say he pushed 1 all the way. On the stand he presents such an impressive outline. Nicely constructed head and muzzle, nicely arched neck into good lay back of shoulder, good depth of chest not quite the length of rib as 1. Properly angulated rear and good length of tail. Just preferred the movement of 1 today.
3rd - Mr S and Mrs L Kuz’s Duncannas Special Edition at Strufingill JW
Not as long as I should like but nice strong head, eye matching coat, good depth of chest, good fore-chest and decent length of rib.

Open Dog 6 (1)
1st - Ms A E Tibbetts and Mr J Garrity’s Potterdale Gorgeous George
Super outline and such a lovely masculine boy with no hint of coarseness. Strong masculine head, dark eye, angulation well balanced front and rear and of correct 5:4 proportions which all helped him move out with excellent extension and drive. Held his topline well and had to pull out all the stops today to win this class and also in the dog challenge against such strong contenders. DCC and RBIS.
2nd - Mr M, Mrs E and Miss L Jay’s Ch Farmarens Drums Of Spring At Talraz JW (Imp Swe)
Smaller type but no doubting his masculinity and again so well balanced, shown immaculately and in great condition. Moved out effortlessly. Lovely balanced head, good depth of chest and strong fore-chest, correctly angulated front and rear and well- muscled second thigh. Another close decision to separate 1 and 2 and strong contender for higher honours.
3rd - Miss E & Mrs J Peart’s Kilfinan Mister Moonlight for Talluarchy
Different type to 1 and 2 but lots to like. Strong head with flat skull, nice front assembly, good depth of chest, correctly textured coat. Ideally, I should prefer a bit more length in relation to his height. Moved out freely.

Veteran Dog 6 (2)
1st - Ms J L Waldron’s Ch Snowmead Shades Of Grey JW
Very masculine boy and what a mover! His movement underlines his super overall construction. Strong head of correct shape and proportions, lovely deep chest, good fore-chest, long rib, excellent rear set up, good hocks for his size. BVD and BVIS
2nd - Mr R and Mrs M Robertson’s Arranbrae Laird of Quothquan JW
Lovely outline of correct 5:4 proportions, good depth of chest, long rib, lovely strong head and soft expression with dark eye. Well-let down hocks. Moved out well but just not the drive of 1.
3rd - Ms S Gibb’s Ch Snikkles Bluebeard At Pirateer JW ShCM ShCEx VW
Another excellent veteran exhibit. Good head of correct proportions, eye matching coat, nice deep chest, good length of rib and good shoulder angulation. Moved out well

Special Vintage Dog 2 (1)
1st - Mr D T and Mrs W Curry’s Davankirk Bromley Main
At 10 this boy is still making life difficult for his handler. But he did enough to show me he can move out well. Has a good masculine head, eye matching coat, good depth of chest and decent length of rib.

Minor Puppy Bitch 3 (0)
1st - Miss A R Cooper’s Tybury’s Origin Of Hope (ai)
Lovely outline, lovely length, good head proportions, excellent front assembly, good depth of chest and length of rib. Moved out well with confidence for one so young.
2nd - Dr S A Savage and Mr D McLean’s Strufingill Penny Benjamin At Canaich
Older minor puppy who is shaping up nicely. Very showy girl, good head, good lay back of shoulder, would prefer to be slightly longer overall but we’ll see what time brings. Moved out well but just edged out by class winner.
3rd - Mr R and Mrs M Robertson’s Quothquan Aylyth
Still 6 months old and going through that stage where growth is uneven. That said I found lovely arch of neck into nice lay back of shoulder, decent length of upper arm, and length of rib. Moved out well.

Puppy Bitch 3 (0)
1st - Mrs D Skinner’s Valkyrie De Chester At Tamjenta (Imp Fra)
What a classy puppy, very showy and so well presented. Lovely balanced head, dark eye, correctly balanced angles front and rear, lovely arched neck into well laid-back shoulders, good length and depth of rib, nicely let down hocks and proper length of tail. Sometimes she can stand a little rear high but as soon as she moves out she holds her top line throughout and flows around the ring. BPB BPIS.

Junior Bitch 1 (0)
1st - Mr M J Johnston’s Corimist Glimmer Of Rye
Stood alone but such a lovely picture. Correct overall proportions, strong yet so feminine head, lovely expression. Good fore-chest, well laid -back shoulders, decent length of rib. Moved out well

Yearling Bitch 4 (2)
1st - Misses M Baker and R van de Hoef’s Malandex Xpression Of Love
Lovely outline of correct 5:4 proportions. Strong but feminine head, lovely soft expression, good length of rib, nicely arched neck into well laid-back shoulders with balanced rear. But comes into her own when moving with great extension and drive and it was this that won her the RBCC.
2nd - Mr N and Mrs A E May’s Sengalas Indiana Charm
Have to say that this girl ran the class winner closely. She presents a lovely picture with head of correct proportions with lively bright expression, good lay back of shoulder, nice length of rib and balanced angulation front and rear leading to sound movement. She moved out well but today she didn’t match the overall picture of 1

Another girl of correct proportions, strong fore-chest, lovely head of correct shape and dimensions, dark eye, nice lay back of shoulder, correct rear angulation and lovely fluid movement.
2nd - Ms V Gamble Capelaw Celeste
She was a bit of a handful for her handler today but she has nice head, lovely dark eye, good length of rib, good fore-chest and nicely angulated. Moved out well.
3rd - Mrs J McKelvie Thingamebob Perfect Pickle
Pleasing brown girl, head of correct proportions, decent shoulder angulation, would prefer slightly greater rear angulation. In tune with her handler on the move.

Post Graduate Bitch 3 (0)
1st - Mrs B Harcourt-Brown’s Farmarens Imperial Highness At Orora (Imp Swe) JW
So well balanced which shows in her excellent flowing movement. Good head proportions, excellent lay back of shoulder and length of upper arm, good length of rib, nicely let down hocks.
2nd - Mr D T and Mrs W Curry Megamaree Shinning Star At Davankirk
Close decision between 2nd and 3rd just preferred the overall shape of this girl. Not the easiest to go over but she has a good head, eye matching coat, good length of rib and did just enough on the move for 2nd.
3rd - Mr R and Mrs M Robertson Heathermist Miss Tillietudlem at Quothquan (Imp Swe)
Lovely strong but feminine head, decent length of rib and good front assembly but has a tendency to stand very rear high which does spoil the overall picture.

Mid Limit Bitch 1 (0)
1st - Mrs E M Ayrton Aoibh Fiery Flamenco JW
Lovely top line both standing and moving. I should like a little more extension ideally. Lovely soft expression, head of correct proportions, nicely arched neck into decent shoulders and good length of rib.

Limit Bitch 9 (2)
1st - Mrs D Skinner Dychix The Rag Nymph
Not a flashy girl but lovely proportions super length and great balance front and rear, excellent angulation which allowed her to move so fluidly around the ring. Also, she has a lovely head of correct proportions and nicely let down hocks.
2nd - Mr G and Mrs C Stead Clovabrae Villanelle
Another excellent girl not the length of one but balanced in her own way. Nice head and dark eye, good lay back of shoulder, good length, shape and depth of rib. She moved out well and it was a close decision between 1 and 2.
3rd - Mr M, Mrs E and Ms L Jay Matamata Lorien Lady At Talraz
Excellent overall shape, super top line, good head and slope of shoulders, good length, shape and depth of rib. Another who moved out soundly in this excellent class

Open Bitch 5 (0)
1st - Mr M and Mrs J Lewis and Mrs D Moreland’s Ch Potterdale Precious Rose
Lovely picture both standing and moving which she does with super extension and balanced drive. Correct length to height, strong but feminine head, nice arch of neck into well angulated shoulders, good fore-chest, correct shape and depth of chest and excellent length of rib. BCC and BIS
2nd - Miss A R Cooper’s Tybury’s Song Of Ice And Fire
Stronger built girl but still feminine, super head, strong fore-chest, good slope of shoulder, nice length of rib. Very pleasing outline and moved out so well in her class to claim 2nd, unfortunately not so settled in challenge.
3rd - Mr L and Mrs M Betts’s Ch Pipadene Extra Hint Of Chilli JW
An extremely tight decision between 2nd and 3rd and one which could easily be reversed another day. Lovely outline on the stand and super top line when moving out which she does with great fluidity. Head of correct proportions, lovely soft expression, good lay back of shoulder and length of rib.

Veteran Bitch 4 (1)
1st - Mrs R Salter’s Irisaddition Effie Trinket JW VW
Lovely head of correct proportions, strong fore-chest, balanced angles fore and aft, good length of rib and comes into her own when on the move which is fluid and purposeful
2nd - Mrs S Muir’s Douglasdale Dream Island
Attractive brown, good head, nice length of rib, good depth of chest, decent lay-back of shoulder and moved out well.
3rd - Mrs A and Mr L Higgins Innkalies Miss Marple At Allachoy
This taller girl has a lovely melting expression, strong head, decent length of rib, not quite the movement of 1 and 2.

Special Vintage Bitch 5 (0)
1st - Mr A and Mrs J Wood’s Ch Pipadene Visionary Spirit For Pepperjay JW
My notes say wow what a lovely picture and at 11 she moved out with a lovely fluid action. Super head, melting expression and dark eyes, good fore-chest and length of rib, excellent front assembly matched by correct rear angulation. Presented so well. She pushed very hard for the BVIS award. Glad to award her BVB.
2nd - Mr R and Mrs M Robertson’s Kiltondale Liadhich with Quothquan ShCM
I’ve liked this girl for many years and to see her move round the ring so well was a pleasure. Now 12.5 years old she was the oldest exhibit in the show. Lovely length to height, good fore-chest, nice length of rib, well laid-back shoulder, nicely let down hocks.
3rd - Mrs R E and Mr I Kneeshaw’s Kiltondale Spring Blossom
Bags of energy belying her 10 plus years. Larger girl but presented a nice outline, she moved out well, lovely feminine expression, well-muscled, decent length of rib, and lay back of shoulder.
