BEARDED COLLIE CLUB OF SCOTLAND CHAMP SHOW HELD ON 3rd OCTOBER 2015

My thanks to the members who voted for me in the ballot and to the Officers and Committee for the usual warm Bearded Collie Club of Scotland welcome. At present there is not the choice in males for top awards, but plenty of choice in bitches. Things I see creeping into the breed are mouths that are not ‘perfect, regular and complete scissor bites i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaw’ as preferred in the standard. Nor are they level bites, but bites where the top set just slightly over laps the lower teeth and no more. There were many exhibits with dipping top-lines - length and depth of ribcage and short loin must be a priority with breeders to correct this fault in future litters. Finally, hind action needs attention as I watched Beardie after Beardie moving away from me with the two hind legs too close together and the resultant lack of drive – I thought of my old friend Nick Broadbridge of the Sallen Beardies who always referred to such dogs as ‘Morgan Three Wheelers’! I did mention this point in my critique three years ago and I see no improvement. I suggest exhibitors should ask friends to move their dogs so that they can see for themselves how these dogs move behind. On the positive side, the temperaments were just what one would expect from this lovely breed and I found fewer over-coated and over-glamorous animals than when I last judged. They are, after all, a working breed. I really enjoyed my day among the Beardie folk.

MPD (3)
1. Baker & Van De Hoef‘s MALANDEX XCLUSIVE DIAMOND. Super typey 8 mths puppy whose coat is of such a sensational shade of chestnut brown. The colour just glows! Gorgeous head with lovely expressive eyes toning with coat. Correct bite and reachy neck which he uses to advantage. Nicely boned legs and feet. Good angulation fore and aft giving steady movement. I liked his balance of length to height. Coat just right for age. Must tighten in top-line.
2. Jones‘s BRAEMORAY LOCH RANZA AT CLANWILLOW. Flashily marked black, a month younger than 1. Lovely headpiece and expression, good neck leading into well laid shoulders. Shown in super coat for quality and quantity and moving soundly on well boned legs and feet. A lovely puppy, but presenting a squarer outline than 1.
3. Hinchcliffe‘s PRETTY BEAR ZWEET DREAM (Imp Ger).

PD (4)
1. Burscough‘s KILFINAN PRINCE HAL. Just in puppy by two days, this rather large blue youngster is made more so by a very heavy coat. So much more mature than the others present. He has a super head and the lovely expressive eyes that come with the blue coat. Correct bite. Well made dog to go over with good length and depth of rib giving a level top-line. Shown in hard muscular condition, heavily boned, he really covers the ground when he gets going. BPD.
2. Braemoray Loch Ranza At Clanwillow.
3. Glasgow‘s J B DE CHESTER AT GALLUS (Imp Fra).

JD (5,1) A disappointing class
1. JB DE CHESTER AT GALLUS (Imp Fra). This 11 mths youngster came third in PD. I remember seeing him at one of his first shows in the UK and was totally bowled over by him because at that time he was simply stunning! I do hope that he can turn the clock back with maturity and get back to fulfil the promise he showed then. At present he is very rangy, was shown lacking body weight and was not holding his top-line. He could be stronger in skull but has nice muzzle properties with large nose. His coat toning eyes give a nice expression. He appears to be between coats for colour and quality and not moving with confidence or enthusiasm (making life hard for his owner/handler). I look forward to him having much better days.
2. Curry‘s DAVANKIRK BROMLEY MAIN. Medium size slate. Quite a nicely shaped dog on un-exaggerated lines. Hard to assess, however as he would not co-operate during the business of examination and movement. When he settles he and his handler will surely have more success.
3. Pollock‘s INNKALIES WILLY WONKA.

YD (5,2) Here came two litter brothers who have changed places in the past. Two nice boys!
1. Steel‘s INVERCOYLE DALLAS DHU. This is a beautifully balanced black dog with good headpiece, nice skull and muzzle ratio with correct bite and good expression. Excels in neck leading into well laid shoulders. Good rib and resultant level top-line. Moving smoothly on well boned legs and feet and covered in a really nice coat for quality and quantity.
2. Handley‘s INVERCOYLE CAPERDONICH AT BARKENBEAR. Many of the above remarks also apply to this blue dog as he too has a lovely balanced headpiece with super expression. Has not quite the reach of neck of his brother and is higher on the leg. His handler really gets the best out of him on the move. Shown in nice jacket.
3. Innkalies Willy Wonka.

ND (3,1)
1. Braemoray Loch Ranza At Clanwillow..
2. J B De Chester at Gallus (Imp Fra)

DD (2)
1. Braemoray Loch Ranza At Clanwillow..
2. J B De Chester at Gallus (Imp Fra)

GD (5,2)
1. Harcourt-Brown‘s ORORA’S ENTERTAINER. 2 yr old dark slate of nice breed type. Balanced head for skull to muzzle ratio, super eye and expression. His arched neck leads into good shoulder placement and front. Well boned legs and feet. Holds his top-line well standing and on the move. His coat is of correct quality and just the right amount for this medium sized dog. His clever handler gets the best from him and he is a steady mover but could be stronger behind.
2. Gill, Cook & Hosie‘s GILLABER BENROMACH. More heavily coated dog than 1. but coat of good texture. Has eye-catching headpiece and expression and is well ribbed for length and depth and thus an immaculate top-line. A good mover, I just preferred the overall balance of 1.
3. Broadbridge & Muir‘s SALLEN RHYDWYN.

PGD (5) Not a lot separated 1. and 2 in this class
1. Jaques & Panas‘s TALRAZ LOOK AND LOOK AGAIN. Stylish, yet unexaggerated 2.1/2 yr dark slate who is well named as he has great ring presence saying ‘look at me’ as he enters the ring. He is a masculine male with balanced head and lovely expression, good bite. He keeps his top-line well both posed and on the move and carries his tail correctly. Well handled and presented. Really sound mover both ends.
2. Stead‘s CLOVABRAE MIDNIGHT SUN JW. Another dark slate, 5mths younger than 1, he has a lot to like about him with his good head and melting expression, reachy neck and level top-line which he holds on the move. Well set tail and carriage. In many ways I was splitting hairs between these two and loved the balance of length to height of this dog, but at this stage in his development he is not so masculine as 1. They both move covering the ground as good Beardies should.
3. Ryan‘s BRAEDOON HIGHLAND LADDIE AT RAZKAL JW Sh.CM.

MLD (4)
1. Atkins & Charles‘s SNIKKLES BLUE PRINT JW. What an elegant dog this 2.1/2 yr old blue has become. With his elegance also comes masculinity and his super balance of length to height presents such a stunning outline. He has a lovely headpiece with dreamy expression, nice skull/muzzle ratio, perfect bite, nicely arched neck and good shoulder placement. Add to this, a true front and correct length and depth of rib creating a strong level top-line with well set and carried tail and you have a stunning dog that I feel should best be judged on the move as he moves in the fleet manner a true Beardie should. Today had to be the day of the Veteran winner, but Blue Print has loads of time to spare and he is without doubt one for the upper house! Res CC.
2. BRAEDOON HIGHLAND LADDIE AT RAZKAL JW Sh.CM. Squarer dog than 1. Mature masculine brown just coming up 3 yrs. He has a very nicely balanced headpiece with good expression and good bite. His reachy neck leads into good shoulder placement and front assembly. He moves with great enthusiasm holding his top-line standing and moving. Good rib. He can be a bit too fond of his tail at times which can let him down. Good exhibit, well presented and handled.
3. Osborne‘s MALANDEX XCLUSIVELY LOVED JW Sh.CM.

LD (6)
1. Peirson, Wheelan & Young‘s CORIMIST CHICAGO FOR KILTONDALE. Flashily marked 21 mths dark slate. A really nice dog that caught my eye as he entered the ring. He has such a super balanced headpiece with dark expressive eye giving lovely expression, arched neck, level top-line. A well constructed dog with good bone and quality jacket. A really good mover but particularly excels in hind action one (of the best today) using his correctly angled quarters to propel him round the ring.
2. Barley‘s RUNIVAL WINTER STORM. I admired the super shape and outline of this 5 yr old slate as he stood in the line-up. I am very hot on good long ribcages and short loin in Beardies as this is the recipe for a level top-line but on examination found him to be the exception that proves the rule because although he held a ramrod level top-line at all times, I would personally have wanted to see more length of rib! He is, of course, very well muscled as one would expect from stock of this owner/handler and this must be the answer. I would like to have seen him carry a bit more body weight to advantage. A really nice headed dog with lovely expression. He moves very well, covering the ground in a lithe manner.
3. Woolley‘s ARATIKA DAYDREAM BELIEVER JW.

OD (7,1)
1. Edwards‘ ROXILYN DARK AND DASHING Sh.CM. Have long been a fan of this delightful brown/redhead. Now 5 yrs, he has such a gorgeous head and expression with eyes exactly toning to coat. His nice neck and front assembly, good rib and strong top-line covered in that lovely coat create such a pleasing picture. A nicely balanced dog, he reaches out and drives using his well angulated and muscled quarters on the move. He is as one with his handler.
2. Handley‘s CH. BARGEMON BARISHNIKOV AT BARKENBEAR JW Sh.CM. Another 5 yr old. I have admired this slate from the ringside on many occasions. A very worthy champion, he has a lovely unexaggerated make and shape with a super balanced headpiece and stunning expression, reachy neck and level top-line. Normally his movement is just picture-book perfect but I felt on the day he was not driving behind as I know he can, and was not in quite his very best jacket.
3. Gibb‘s CH. DYCHIX CAPTAIN JACK JW Sh.CM.

VETERAN D (4,1)
1. Gill, Cook‘s RAMSGROVE HOMEWARD BOUND TO GILLABER JW Sh.CM. Now came, much to my surprise (and that of his owners) the star of the show. I last judged this classic blue some 3 yrs ago when I gave him Open Dog. When I asked his age, on the day I was told coming up ten but he thinks he’s two! She was right. He is in such good order from his lovely head with the dreamy eye colour that goes with good blues to the tip of his correctly carried tail. His head is so balanced with lovely skull, nice muzzle and full perfect dentition. His crested neck leads into well laid shoulders and fine front assembly. He has such good body for balance of length to height plus rib/loin ratio. He is well muscled throughout and wearing a super coat for quality and quantity. What more can I say? He just knew it was his day and swept round the ring in fine form taking his long awaited third CC and later B.I.S which I thought fitting to go with his new title. How proud his owners and breeder must be of this dog!
2. Glasgow‘s CH. GALLUS ABSOLUTE QUALITY JW Sh.CM. Another of our elder statesmen shown in fine body and coat. He gave away 21 mths to the winner and although I hate to see the phrase ‘unlucky to meet the above’ trotted out, it does apply in this case! Another redhead, he was well handled to show off his good points such as lovely headpiece, reachy neck, level top and well carried tail etc. He was also enjoying his day and showing his head off.
3. Aughey‘s LOCHBARRA DARK SHADOW FOR AUGHENAIRD.

SP. VINTAGE D (2,1)
1. Broadbridge & Muir‘s SALLEN HARRAR I was so pleased to be able to judge this Scottish legend – “Harry” to his fans - as now 12.1/2 yrs old, he was retired on the day. He has retained his balanced head with fabulous expression (eyes toning with that sensationally dark brown quality coat). He has passed his colour onto many of his offspring. He holds his top-line well (really good rib/loin ratio) and moves round the ring with great purpose – another whose owners/breeder must be mightily proud! Happy retirement, Harry – the sofa in front of the telly for you from now on!

SP.OD (2)
1. Ch. Gallus Absolute Quality JW Sh.CM.
2. LOCHBARRA DARK SHADOW FOR AUGHENAIRD. 3rd in Veteran. I have ‘Mr Grumpy’ written on my judging book because this 7 yr old slate looked as if he wished he was anywhere but at a dog show! He has many good points which he likes to keep hidden, but is a beautiful headed dog with balanced skull/ muzzle, great expression, correct bite etc. He likes to hide his good neck and correct level top-line and sound movement both ends if he can, in the hope that he won’t be asked to repeat the performance! A very nice exhibit.

MPB (4,2)
1. Hard‘s BRAEMORAY LOCH AN EILEIN. Nicely marked dark slate 7 mths baby. Such a sweet head and expression. Nice skull, muzzle and scissor bite. So feminine throughout and so well balanced. Her lovely reachy neck leads into well laid shoulders and nice front assembly with well boned legs and feet. She has a super rib/loin setup keeping her top-line level. Covered in a correct amount of coat for her age, she moves freely round the ring – well presented and handled.
2. Peirson‘s KILTONDALE PEARLS A SINGER. Blue, just a week older than 1, but not quite so ready. She also has a lovely feminine head and dreamy expression and good bite. She has a nicely arched neck and good shoulders, good top-line and well off for bone. She is at present, just a little tall for her length, but time is on her side to adjust. Coat just coming through. Another smart mover.

PB (2)
1. Baker & Van de Hoef‘s MALANDEX XQUISIT DIAMOND. Litter sister to the MPD winner. Not the dramatic colouring of her brother, but still a good strong brown with very flashy markings. She is quite breathtaking with her lovely headpiece, arched neck and super clean lines throughout. She has a lovely balance of skull to muzzle with correct bite. So well put together, well off for bone yet so feminine, she has a great front assembly, ribcage/loin ratio, top-line level at all times. And how she can move - soundly and so smoothly – quite stunning and what a future in the ring awaits this gorgeous young lady – BP in Show.
2. Kiltondale Pearls A Singer.

JB (5)
1. Baker & Van de Hoef‘s ALISTAIR’S XPATRIATE AT MALANDEX JW. What lucky exhibitors these are to have such outstanding young Beardies, winning MPD, PB & JB! The breed type is super. This light slate Junior just filled my eye as she came into the ring. At 17 mths she screams quality standing and is a dream on the move. She has it all from her classic head with lovely expression, correct bite etc along her lovely length of level back to the tip of her well set and carried tail. She is covered in a coat of such good texture and correct for quantity at her tender years. This young lady will surely gain her title and time is on her side. I was happy to award her the RCC in strong competition but will watch her career with interest.
2. Jay‘s TALRAZ MAY QUEEN. Only a day separates these two girls in age but May Queen appears quite a bit more mature and a little larger than 1. having a bulkier coat. She is a very nice exhibit who moves very well reaching and driving, but unfortunately she spoils the picture at times by not always holding her top-line
3. Wallis‘ BARGEMON TOSCA.

YB (9,1)
1. Whelan & Young‘s VICTORY WINDS JUST THE GIRL FOR CORIMIST (Imp). This is a very elegant and graceful Beardie just out of Junior. Such a lovely balanced head with super expression, nice skull and muzzle and dentition. Her neck is reachy and she has nice shoulder placement, good front and is well off for rib in length and depth together with short loin. She holds her top-line standing and moving. I love the quality of her pale brown coat. She excels in strong hindquarters and uses them to drive round the ring in great style. Another whose career I will follow with interest.
2. Talraz May Queen.
3. Barley‘s RUNIVAL STORMY GLORY.

NB (6,1)
1. Bargemon Tosca. Third in JB. Just coming up 15 mths,, this is a nice headed bitch that catches the eye. Shown in very good coat, she’s quite a big girl but presents a good outline. When she settles to the job, she moves really well reaching out in front and driving with her strong hindquarters.
2. Braemoray Loch An Eilein.
3. Jaffe‘s FRANLANE LUCKY HEATHER.

DB (6,1)
1. Bargemon Tosca.
2. Braemoray Loch An Eilein.
3. Franlane Lucky Heather.

GB (6,1)
1. Gill, Cook & Hosie‘s GILLABER BENACHIE. 2yrs old light slate, very feminine throughout, really pretty headpiece. Good skull, nice muzzle and correct dentition. Her dark eyes give super expression. Good neck and shoulder placement. Really nice outline with level top standing and moving. Her coat is of really good texture. Moves well for her handler.
2. Robinson‘s THINGMABOB SHES THE ONE. Another light slate, similar type to 1 in many ways with her good head and expression. Gives the impression of being heavier throughout due to carrying a much bulkier coat. Well boned legs and feet and a very sound mover.
3. Jemmett‘s HIGHGLADE ICE DIAMOND FOR WESTBERE JW.

PGB (11,4)
1. Harkin‘s MERRYTHORPE MISS SCARLETT AT CLAUDALLA. I last saw this quality brown bitch as a puppy. Very beautiful coat of correct texture. Balanced head with such a lovely expression. Reachy neck and good front assembly. She has such flowing movement when she settles to the job, but now and again she can give her handler a hard time. Her outstanding quality won her this strong class and kept her in for the challenge.
2. Stead‘s CLOVABRAE NORTHERN STAR. Another really good mover, this lovely dark slate with flashy markings pushed hard in this class, Just a month younger than 1., she also has lovely head properties, good expression, nice neck and body shape, Shown in quality coat and excellent muscular condition.
3. Jay‘s TALRAZ FLEUR DE LYS JW.

MLB (10,1)
1. Delaney‘s ARRANBRAE JUST ONE LOOK JW. 4.1/2 yr old dark slate. Unexaggerated bitch of quality who is always there or thereabouts in her classes at Ch. Shows. She is ultra feminine throughout with nice headpiece, good neck and holds her top-line well. Carrying just the right amount of coat for size. She is a very precise mover and covers the ground well. Deserved her place in the final challenge.
2. Peart‘s TALLUARCHY ANGEL WINGS Sh.CM. Very similar to 1. In age, breed type, make and shape so many of the above remarks apply but I felt that 1. Had the edge in strength of top-line. Two really nice bitches

1. Robertson‘s KILTONDALE LIADICH WITH QUOTHQUAN Sh.CM. I have watched this glamorously marked black/white elegant bitch since she first appeared in the ring. Now coming up 4 yrs, she is one of those select few that combine glamour with a workmanlike appearance. She has a very appealing headpiece with good skull to muzzle ratio, correct dentition and such a lovely soft and affectionate expression from her rich brown eyes. From a judge’s viewpoint she is just so good to go over with lovely neck leading into well laid shoulders and good front assembly. Well boned legs and feet. Her good length of back is made from a superb ribcage/loin ratio which means she is level at all times – just can’t stand wrong. Her coat is correct for super quality and quantity. This bitch had, without question, the best muscle-tone of the day – not spent too long lounging on the sofa, I dare guess! She is another that is best judged on the move because this is where she absolutely excels reaching and driving and carrying her tail correctly. Her handler is used to hearing that she could do it all on her own because he really just accompanies her round the ring! I have seen her placed too often behind inferior bitches - good judges should be able to see beyond handling! She illustrates the old adage ‘she looks as if she could go on all day! Fresh from her RCC win at Driffield, I was delighted to be the one to set her on the road to her title with the CC.
2. Woolley‘s ARATIKA CREME DE LA CREME JW. Five months older, this quality brown bitch with even white markings was my Best Puppy when I last judged her. She has gone on to fulfil her promise I could see in her that day. She has a lovely balanced head and expressive eyes toning nicely with coat colour. Lovely balance of length to height with good body properties covered in a jacket of great quality. She moves really soundly and with drive. She is a very nice exhibit and deserved her place in the challenge for the Res CC.
3. Jay‘s TALRAZ HOT FAVOURITE.

1. Edwards‘ CH LUM-BI-NI HOPEFUL ISABELLA (Imp Ger).Coming up 5 yrs, this very feminine slate presents a nice shape and outline, being very well balanced for length to height. She has a lovely headpiece with soft expression, crested neck and good shoulders. Her coat is of good quality and just right for quantity complimenting her size. Her expert handler really gets her going using the ring.
2. Harcourt-Brown‘s ENIGMA AT ORORA JW. 4 yr old slate with pretty head and appealing expression. Very feminine throughout, shown in really good coat and in hard condition. A shorter backed bitch than 1. And on the move did not have the reach in front of 1.
3. Wooley‘s ARATIKA SPIRIT MAID.

VB (9,2) Based on the high quality standard throughout, this was, without doubt, the best class of the day – so much so, I really didn’t want to separate these lovely ladies!
1. Weightman‘s CH. DEBBEACOL PRIDE AND JOY JW. What a classy lady! Shown in lovely coat and bloom she belies her 8 yrs. She has lovely head qualities with delightful and appealing expression and correct dentition. What a mover! Her movement and drive would put many of the youngsters to shame and she obviously still enjoys her time in the ring. Fills the eye as she comes into the ring. What a worthy title holder!
2. Canty‘s BARGEMON EN VOGUE Sh.CM. I found very little separated these two lovely bitches. A year older than 1, she also has an eye-catching head and expression. A lovely balance of length to height and covered in a quality jacket, she moved out really well for her handler. I was splitting hairs here, but fealt that1. was just a little firmer in top-line..
3. Harkin‘s CH. CLAUDALLA JENNY WREN JW Sh.CM.

SP. VINTAGE B (5,1) Another super class of our gorgeous even more senior ladies – each one obviously being proudly shown – a credit to their owners.
1. Curry‘s SIREN IN SILK AT DAVANKIRK . What a lovely blue bitch 11.3/4 yrs young! She just stood out in this class for me. Her head and expression are simply stunning plus complete dentition. Nice neck and holding her top-line well giving such a super outline standing and moving. Carrying a luxurious coat for age. How justifiably proud of her, her owner seems to be of this lady.
2. Carter‘s EDENBOROUGH LOOK AT ME.10.1/2 yr old slate. Taller model than 1, but pushed quite hard in this class. Lovely headed and with great expression she moves with great extension and carries a lovely quality coat. This handler makes the most of her many virtues.
3. Hall‘s BARGEMON LA NAPOULE.

SP. OB (3)
1. Glasgow‘s GALLUS LIVING THE DREAM. Now into her tenth year, this bitch definitely belies her age with her really fit condition, good muscle-tone and abundant quality coat. I have the words ‘stately lady’ in my notes and this does just describe her movement in. Another who is a credit to her owner.
2. Jemmett‘s WESTBERE WHISPERING ANGEL.3yrs old slate/tri with sweet head and expression. Underneath a rather fluffy coat which makes her appear bulkier than she is, lies a well shaped bitch with good outline, holding her top-line well. She is a very energetic mover. Well boned legs and feet.
3. Spray‘s DOUGLASDALE PERFECT DREAM.
