Bearded Collie Club of Scotland Open Show Saturday 1st March 2014
I had a lovely day with plenty of quality exhibits to go over, unfortunately, the weather meant that the Show had to be held indoors and this did not suit all. Many thanks to the membership for inviting me to judge, for the great hospitality from the committee and for the exhibitors who entered.
On the whole I thought the bitches were better than the dogs on the day. I only found a couple of questionable mouths and hardly any dirty teeth. Movement was a little erratic with a few exhibits worried about the indoor floor but muscle tone was good so I’m sure they would have done better outside. I found a few short tails but more worrying were the exhibits with lack of pigment, especially on the lips, this is probably something that needs watching. Eye colour and tails were acceptable but only a few had the depth of eye colour that is so enchanting. Coats were excellent in texture and grooming was as always very good. I was spoilt for choice in a few of the classes and a few very worthy exhibits were not in the top place, I’m sure that could change on another day. It was a shame about the lack of puppies in both sexes, hopefully this is to do with the time of year and not a trend.
Special Vintage Dog (2,0)
1. Broadbridge & Muir’s SALLEN HARRAR, 11year old Brown. Nice expression and eye toning with coat. An old fashioned type. Moved out well.

Veteran Dog (4,0)
1. Hosie’s Ch. CIOPAR FLASH FISICHELLA BViS, 8 year old Dark Slate. Like his shape and proportions. Solidly made boy with good expression and rib length. Well muscled, moved well. Well deserved his Best Veteran in Show.
2. Gill & Cook’s RAMSGROVE HOMEWARD BOUND TO GILLABER JW ShCM, 8 year old Blue. Another well muscled boy, lighter in bone than 1. Happy mover.
3. Stott’s MOBUFF KASHMIR as Sp VD

Puppy Dog (2,1)
1. Gamble’s TALRAZ LOOK TO THE FUTURE BPiS, 11month old Dark Slate. Well this young man did his best to throw away his chances! He has a lovely expression coming from dark eyes in a good flat skull, has a good coat and lovely body length. He was rather unsettled on the move in this class but behaved better in the challenge and was awarded Best Puppy in Show. Just needs more time to fulfil his potential.
Junior Dog (7,3)
1. Ryan & Black’s BRAEDOON HIGHLAND LADDIE AT RAZKAL ShCM, 15 month old Brown. Going through a paler stage at the moment that will change as he ages. Mid Limit Dog (3,1)
1. Ayrton’s BRADDABROOK MUTO, 6 year old Blue. A plainly marked boy. Liked his proportions, deep chest, good shoulders, ribs and loin. Good coat and kept his topline when moving.
2. Peart’s GILLABER BALLACHULISH FOR TALLUARCHY, 5 year old Slate. Built on a smaller frame than 1 and possibly a little short on the leg. Having said that, he did not disappoint when being examined. Good pigmentation, good bite and good coat. Did not drive out so much on the move and carried his tail a little high.
Limit Dog (4,0)
1. Burscough’s KILFINAN COUNTRY KNIGHT RBD, 3 year old Slate. Strong head with good dark eye, good dentition, expression and pigmentation. Balanced body with well fitting shoulders and backend. Moved well. Well groomed and well handled. Pushed hard in the challenge to win Reserve Best Dog.
2. Fox’s BUSHBLADES AMERICAN DREAMS, 3 year old Brown. Nice head and neck leading to well fitting shoulders. Smaller in build than 1 and seemed a little unsure of his surroundings. Well groomed and handled.
3. Aughey’s LOCHBARRA DARK SHADOW FOR AUCHENAIRD, 5 year old Dark Slate. An old fashioned type with an expression you could get lost in! His coat is not his fortune and his movement could be more purposeful. However, a lovely boy.
4. Ayrton’s BRADDABROOK MUTO
Open Dog (4,1)
1. Glasgow’s GALLUS ABSOLUTE QUALITY JW BD & BOS 6 year old Brown. Not the biggest boy here today but you could not mistake his masculinity. Very nice head with matching eye colour, neck flowing well into shoulders. Balanced body with a deep chest and rib length, matching angles of shoulders and backend which gave him a beautiful elegant look on the stand. Excellent movement maintaining a firm topline with a good tail carriage. As his name suggests he is a quality boy. I had no hesitation to give him Best Dog and Best Opposite Sex in Show.
2. Gill & Cook’s GILLABER BALLATER, 5 year old Dark Slate. Not the biggest boy here today but you could not mistake his masculinity. A little shorter in neck so did not have the same elegance as 1, although still very nicely put together. Good head and expression, moved well.
3. Cunningham’s BUSTROC TAM O’SHANTER, Almost 8 year old Light Slate. Has correct length and height ratios, a nice head and good coat texture. Not moving out with as much reach and drive as others in the class.
Special Vintage Bitch (1,1)
Veteran Bitch (3,0)
1. Glasgow’s GALLUS LIVING THE DREAM, 8 year old Light Slate. In very good condition for her age. Nicely proportioned and balanced. Moved well.
2. Buchanan-Hislop’s CIOPAR CELTIC CHANCER, 7 year old Dark Slate. Loved the expression coming from her dark eyes. Another well put together girl although a little overweight she moved out well with a happy tail.
3. Peart’s MOSTONBRAE ANGEL OF PEACE FOR TALLUARCHY, 7 year old Dark Slate. Good head, eyes and excellent teeth. Coat in excellent condition. She was also a little overweight and this showed in her movement.
Minor Puppy Bitch (2,0)
1. Bursclough’s CHETCOTE GONE WITH THE WIND TO KILFINNAN, 8 month old Light Slate. A well schooled youngster who did not put a paw wrong. Flat skull, good head and matching eye. Nicely put together although I would prefer a slightly longer length. Moved well. Has plenty of time.
2. Goodbrand’s DYCHIX WHISTLES AND BELLS, 6 month old Dark Slate. At her first Show this young lady did not help her handler get the best out of her! A lovely dark eye and expression and when she stood still had a good length. Movement was a little erratic but its early days and again, she has plenty of time.
Puppy Bitch (3,0)
1. Kirby’s FINESK BORDER RIEVER, 11 month old Blue. Almost a year old and with a good blue coat and eyes to match. Well muscled which gave her a good steady movement.

3. Goodbrand’s DYCHIX WHISTLES AND BELLS, as MPB

1. Ballantyne & Evans’s BALBRIDGE NANSIES KISS, 13 month old Slate. A plainly marked young lady. She is a nice size all through. Good skull, pigmentation, nice neck leading into well laid back shoulders. Nice rib shape and length with a short loin. Well let down hocks which gave a good steady movement. Another to watch for the future.
2. Fox & Farrier’s BUSHBLADES CAUSIN A STORM WITH KAYANARRA, 13 month old Slate. Close decision between these first two. This youngster is slightly smaller in build, but is well balanced and very nice to go over with all the same points applying as 1. Moved well. I’m sure these two young ladies will change places many times in their showing careers.
3. Whelan & Young’s CORIMIST COVER GIRL, 14 month old Dark Slate. Striking, top sized young lady with a great head and expression. She has balanced proportions, a good rib length and good short loin. She moved well although her handler was struggling with an injury.

1. Fox & Farrier’s BUSHBLADES CAUSIN A STORM WITH KAYANARRA, as JB
2. Wardlaw’s DUNCANNAS COPPER GLOW, 14 month old brown. She is a nice size with good proportions. Movement could have been steadier but she did well considering this was her first Show. Happy girl.
Maiden Bitch (4,1)
1. Buchanan-Hislop’s CIOPAR CELTIC MINE ALONE, 14 month old Dark Slate. Another quality girl with a good head, dark eye and expression. Rib length and shape were correct as were her overall proportions. Moved ok. She needs a little more confidence to fulfil her potential.

2. Spray’s DOUGLASDALE PERFECT DREAM, 2 and a half year old Brown. Lighter in eye colour than her coat suggests. Plainly marked coat but of correct texture, good construction. Moved ok and enjoying her day.
Graduate Bitch (8,0)
1. Peart’s TALLUARCHY ANGEL WINGS, 2 year old Slate. Good head properties with pleasing eye and dentition. Good bone, muscle and coat texture. Moved steadily although she seemed a bit apprehensive. Liked her type.
2. Robertson’s KILTONDALE LIADHICH WITH QUOTHQUAN, 2 year old Dark Slate. Close decision between these two, liked her type and size. Rib not as good as 1 and would like a darker eye. Moved ok.
3. Jemmett’s HIGHGLADE ICE DIAMOND FOR WESTBERE JW, 2 year old Blue. A happy girl that wagged her tail the whole way through the Class. Well up to size, but good proportions. Well groomed and handled.
4. Fox’s BUSHBLADES WIRED FOR SOUND
Post Graduate Bitch (4,0)
1. Delaney’s ARRANBRAE JUST ONE LOOK JW RBB & RBiS, 3 year old Slate. Not a flashy girl but very nice. Particularly liked her calmness, although this is possibly only at a Show! Nice size with good head properties and dark eyes. Lovely neck with a good fore chest leading into a firm topline. Excellent harsh jacket. Moved well around the ring which gave her Reserve Best Bitch and Reserve Best in Show. Daughter of my Best Dog and has a lot of his fine attributes.
2. Robertson’s KILTONDALE LIADHICH WITH QUOTHQUAN, as GB
3. Ayrton’s BRADDABROOK FORGET ME NOT AT AOIBH, 2 year old Slate. Nothing to dislike about this young lady, just didn’t have the extra sparkle in the ring. Well balanced and moved well enough although tail a little high.
4. Matthews’s ECHORIDGE MAGAIDHA GLASCHU
Mid Limit Bitch (3,0)
1. Delaney’s DUNCANNAS CLASSY LASSIE OF ARRANBRAE, almost 6 year old Dark Slate. A well balanced lady with a good chest, front, rib, topline and well let down hocks. Movement was a little disappointing. Would probably have liked to be outside. Nevertheless a nice bitch.
2. Kirby’s FINESK LADIES FANCY ShCM, 5 year old Slate. Lacking a little in coat but what she had was of good texture. True Beardie expression from toning eyes with good pigmentation. Straight front with good ribs and topline. Moved ok.
3. Duncan’s DUNCANNAS TAMMY SHE’S THE ONE, Brown litter sister to the winner of the class and the same remarks apply. Carrying a little more weight which showed when she was standing and when she moved.
Limit Bitch (3,0)
1. Glasgow’s GALLUS FORTUNE COOKIE BB & BiS, 2 year old Slate. Stunning young lady that as her age suggests has more to give. Nice head with good eye colour, pigmentation and dentition. Very well balanced, with a deep chest, good spring and length of rib, short loin leading to a well muscled back end. Straight topline was held on the move. Going through a bit of a coat change at the moment but the texture was excellent. Won Best Bitch and Best in Show today and I’m sure it will not be her last.
2. Duncan’s DUNCANNAS TAMMY SHE’S THE ONE, as MLB
3. Steel’s PATTISHAWL JUST DREAMING, 5 year old Slate. Another well covered lady. Not as well schooled as the others in the class and it showed. Having said that she has a very nice expression and outline. Good muscled back end but could use a bit more grooming.
