I thoroughly enjoyed my day’s judging and thank my stewards for looking after me and keeping things moving along at a good pace. Well done to all the exhibitors, especially the long-distance ones, who travelled through atrocious weather to get there.
I found many Beardies that I liked very much, having the long body, correct ribcage and flowing stride that is the essence of the breed; there were more than a dozen here today I would cheerfully give a CC to. Forequarters were generally well set and angulated, with little sign of the looseness that used to be so common, and there were few barrelled ribs today. Movement was mostly sound, and occasionally wonderful, but in the indoor environment many dogs clearly didn’t give of their best. There were several moving too close or weaving, some that lacked rear drive, and a couple that were very over-angulated behind. Pigmentation was generally full but often paler than it should be, and there were two bad mouths. There were rather a lot of dirty teeth and cold eyes that were too pale for the coat colour. Two males demonstrated poor temperament that suggests the show ring is not the best or kindest place for them, but all the other exhibits were their usual happy selves.
MPD (5,0 absent) 1 Thorpe’s Claudalla Jacob Marley at Merrythorpe: 8 mths pale slate. Good skull, warm eye colour, super reach of neck from well laid shoulders, excellent length and shape of rib, plenty of rear drive, moved fluidly. Very promising; 2 Gibb’s Dychix Captain Jack: dark slate, just 6 months. Balanced angulation, a well-set front, good length of rib. He and his handler needed to settle down and concentrate, especially on the move, but I think this was his first show and they have plenty of time to learn the ropes! 3 Oakes’ Mostonbrae Ticket To Ride. PD (6,0) 1 Paterson’s Gallus Absolute Quality: 11mths brown. I would like him slightly taller, but that was all I could fault in this excellent youngster. Good reach of neck coming from beautifully laid shoulders flowing into a strong topline over long ribs, and with his driving rear action he flew like an arrow from a bow round the ring. He has a strong and masculine head and good pigmentation, RBPIS; 2 Claudalla Jacob Marley at Merrythorpe 3 Mostonbrae Ticket to Ride.. JD (5,2) 1 Harcourt-Brown’s Orora’s Jupiter: 15mths slate at his first show and a trifle unsettled but he moved out well enough to win this class. I liked his front construction and head; 2 Hood’s Bryonyhill Mr Ree: 16 mth slate with a super head and expression and good depth of rib. I preferred the rear construction and overall balance of 1; 3 Drummond & Forrest’s Kiltondale Mid-Knight. SYD (4,1) 1 Fox & Farrier’s Bushblades Transaction: top quality slate youngster who just filled my eye. Strong and masculine head, good pigmentation, warm expression, elegant reach of neck, good length of upper arm and super shoulder layback; well shaped, long ribcage, correct length to height ratio, and well turned hocks. He flowed effortlessly round the ring with an expansive stride, never stopped showing, and was everything a young Beardie male should be. CC and RBIS; 2 Betts’ Pipadene Time to Review, a handsome brown with a nice head and lovely warm eye colour. His movement was balanced but he didn’t have the extension of 1, being less angulated; 3 McTaggart’s Loch Lomond Laddie. ND (4,1) 1 Gallus Absolute Quality; 2 Orora’s Jupiter; 3 Pipadene Time to Review. DD (8,5) 1 Gallus Absolute Quality; 2 Orora’s Jupiter; 3 Claudalla Jacob Marley at Merrythorpe. GD (10,5) 1 Gill & Cook’s Ramsgrove Homeward Bound to Gillaber: blue dog of great quality, although another one I would prefer a size larger. Really well laid shoulders and upper arm, good reach of neck, excellent shape and length of ribcage, correctly set croup, fluent mover extending well at both ends; 2 Wood’s Potterdale Star Audition for Pepperjay: eye catching slate boy with good shoulders and topline, balanced angulation giving sound free movement. Not quite the length of rib and back of 1;
3 Kiltondale Mid-Knight. PGD (7,4) 1 Paterson’s Ciopar Just the Ticket at Gallus: slate with a handsome, masculine head who moved soundly and freely but rather proud of his tail; 2 Drummond’s Barkly the Great Gatsby: nicely constructed slate with a good head and well-shaped ribcage. He appealed for type, construction and movement but his handler was having such difficulty controlling him that he had to miss out on the first place; 3 Durrant’s Brathens Cooter Crofter. MLD (2,1) 1 Nicholls-Ward’s Bumbleridge’s Naughty’n’Nice: slate dog, stood alone but every inch a winner regardless. Well shaped skull, warm eye, lovely reach of neck, strong topline, deep ribs. Balanced and free mover. LD (4,1) 1 Jellie’s Jellwell Juke Box Jury: Upstanding slate, easily ignored because of his very plain markings, and I confess my eye slid past him in the lineup, but my attention was riveted as soon as he moved. Very good shoulder layback with a long upper arm gave him excellent forward reach, balanced by a strong driving rear. Deep correct ribs, good topline, handsome head; 2 Hutchin & Ward’s Atherleigh Rufus: Good quality brown with a strong skull and nice warm eye colour, good proportions and topline, and neat driving hocks. Not as much front extension as 1; 3 Pedder’s Caldermist Winter Legacy. OD (10,4) 1 Hards’ Ch.Braemoray Summer Sunrise: super quality slate in good form today, exuding elegance and balance as he moved effortlessly round, aided by a particularly well-set front and strong driving hocks.. His good length of body comes from his ribcage, not his loin. He has a handsome head with warm dark eyes and strong pigmentation, and I liked his size and proportions. Res.CC.; 2 Spurrier’s Ch.Geliland Sea Breeze: Another very good slate dog, of larger and more glamorous type, with a particularly handsome head and nice warm eye colour, excellent shoulders, strong rear and fluent movement. Liked him very much; 3 Stead’s Ch.Gillaber Kincorth. VD (1,0) 1 Aughey’s Aughenaird Clydes Double: 10 yr old dark slate in good body condition, fit and well-muscled. Good breadth of skull and dark eye colour. Moved round soundly with good forward reach. SVD (1,0) 1 Szmidt’s Moppetswood Touch of Magic: 11 yr-old slate also in very good condition. Good length of rib and a firm topline. Balanced angulation giving free and sound movement. SOD (4,0) 1 Hosie’s Ch.Ciopar Flash Fisichella: glamorous slate dog of great quality.. Nice dark eye, strong skull, lovely shoulders, deep long ribs. Very balanced both standing and on the move; 2 Aughenaird Clydes Double; 3 Buchanan-Hislop’s Ch.Ciopar Celtic Razzle’s Boy.
MPB (9,4) 1 Newton’s Ramsgrove Play Thyme with Sylvabrae: liked everything about this 8mth slate youngster – pretty head, good pigment, long neck, super shoulders, good length and depth of ribs, neat strong hocks. She went well in this class but became unsettled later which put her at a disadvantage; 2 Thorpe’s Ramsgrove Thyme Glass at Merrythorpe: very nice blue littermate, same attributes as 1 and just as well made, little to choose between them; 3 Hutchin & Ward’s Pattishawl Pirouette to Athemburgh.
PB (8,2) 1 Nicholls-Ward’s Bumbleridge’s Morning Mist: Super quality 11mth slate. Lovely feminine head, full pigmentation and warm dark eye, good neck and topline, well laid shoulders, excellent ribcage, crisp coat coming through, moved with long and easy strides, showed with great composure all day BPIS; 2 Ramsgrove Play Thyme with Sylvabrae; 3 Ramsgrove Thyme Glass at Merrythorpe. JB (8,0) A nice class and I liked all five youngsters placed. 1 Hards’ Braemoray Isle of Gigha: graceful 12mth slate with a lovely outline. Strong but feminine head, medium eye that tones with her coat at present, good reach of neck and length of rib. Supple, reachy movement coming from a sound and well-made front and strong, pushy hocks; 2 Kemp’s Kiltondale Nice Try for Scalbeck: 14mths slate tri also of very good quality, lovely front and super ribcage, very balanced and flowing on the move; 3 Hood’s Bryonyhill Miss Tickle. SYB (11,4) Another good class. 1 Baker’s Malandex Xquisitly Made: Aptly-named slate, warm feminine expression, good length of body and elegant reach of neck. Moved beautifully, covering plenty of ground, nice pushy hocks; 2 Buchanan-Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Chancer, another good slate with a pretty head. Good forward reach and plenty of rear drive to balance it, super length and shape of ribcage; 3 Woolley’s Pipadene Time to Shine for Aratika NB (12,4) 1 Bumbleridge’s Morning Mist; 2 Kiltondale Nice Try for Scalbeck; 3 Bryonyhill Miss Tickle. DB (9,4) 1 Bumbleridge’s Morning Mist; 2 Kiltondale Nice Try for Scalbeck; 3 Bryonyhill Miss Tickle. GB (10,3) Jemmett’s Westbere Whisper: lovely 2 yr old slate with all the virtues I like – beautiful gentle expression, good skull and ears, correct length coming from excellent ribbing, good angulation both ends giving balanced, supple, ground-covering movement, and a crisp, layered adult coat coming through so she’s starting to look the part. In the challenge, she outmoved everything else, floating effortlessly round, and could not be denied the CC, and her balance and composure earned her BIS; 2 Ciopar Celtic Chancer; 3 Pipadene Time to Shine for Aratika. PGB (7,3) 1 Ballantyne & Burns’ Bustroc Red Red Rose: feminine brown with good pigmentation. Very nicely constructed with well-laid shoulders and positive rear movement. Excellent length of rib; 2 Paterson’s Gallus Living the Dream, taller slate with a lovely head and gentle expression. Good shoulder layback, deep ribs, good topline; 3 Jay’s Talraz Honey Trap. MLB (3,1) 1 Johnston’s Potterdale Star of Peebles: glamorous slate with a lovely topline coming from well-shaped shoulders and good length of back and ribs. Moved freely and soundly; 2 Hunter’s Bushblades Alabama Song for Sheskaty, sweetly feminine slate of a taller type with very dark eye colour giving her a melting expression. Good length and depth of ribcage and balanced angulation giving free and steady movement. LB (10,2) 1 Syzling’s Maraval Mayora: good quality, gorgeous dark brown with lovely dark eyes and good pigmentation. Very well constructed with excellent length of rib and good angulation and rear drive, covering plenty of ground on the move. I liked her very much and was disappointed to observe that she became progressively more unsettled and tense as time wore on, leaving her at a disadvantage in the challenge; 2 Clark’s Toriavic Headstrong: slate with a really pretty head and lovely dark eye and pigment, strong, well-ribbed body and sound, balanced movement; 3 Fox’s Bushblades American Tune. OB (13,5) 1 Ballantyne & Burns’ Ch.Bustroc Ae Fond Kiss: lovely brown with a beautiful head and expression, good front and shoulders and strong driving rear. She moved with supple elegance and her queenly composure demanded attention. Res CC.; 2 Baker’s Ch. Malandex Xquisit: another lovely brown with a super reach of neck and length of rib, very well made shoulders and neat hocks. She could carry less weight to advantage; 3 Fox & Farrier’s Bushblades Tranquil Skies at Kayanarra. VB (3,2) 1 Gill & Cook’s Ch.Gillaber Drumoak: 9 yr old slate in super condition, pretty head with dark eyes and good pigmentation. Well balanced angulation giving sound, free movement. SVB (7,3) Nelson’s Thornyhill Serendipity: 11 yr old slate in excellent condition, moving out soundly with the vivacity of a youngster. Lovely flat skull, dark eyes, good neck and shoulders, well-ribbed body, strong hocks. BVIS; 2 Clark’s Toriavic Fine Romance: 10 yr old feminine dark brown, well muscled and fit, moving freely with supple strength. Lovely dark eyes and a sweet expression; 3 Delaney’s Arranbrae Just By Chance: 14 yr old slate in wonderful coat and condition for her age – so nice to see her enjoying her day out. SOB (2,0) 1 Westbere Whisper; 2 Ciopar Celtic Chancer.
