BEARDED COLLIE CLUB OF SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
LANARK SATURDAY 3rd October 2009

My thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge, and to the members for a super entry. My stewards kept things moving with great efficiency and I thoroughly enjoyed the typical Scottish warmth and hospitality.
Having not been around the breed rings much this year, many of the dogs were new to me- or had changed since I last saw them! – as Beardies do – which made the judging all the more interesting. I was a little disappointed, in a show of this standing, to find some exhibits harbouring matted areas in their coats, especially underneath, but on the plus side temperaments were as anticipated very good, with just a couple displaying signs of shyness on handling.
Our ring was large and the good movers had ample opportunity to show us what they could do, and I am delighted to say that the class winners could all cover the ground. As ever, I kept in mind that the Beardie began as a working sheepdog, and looked for lithe, muscular animals showing balance and alertness – and felt that my BIS bitch was an object lesson on the move, combining elegance with efficiency, lovely to watch.
MINOR PUPPY DOG (5, 1abs) 1. Mangnall & Burfitt’s Breaksea G.I. Blues, at 8 ½ months looking mature in this class, in full puppy coat. Good length and outline, smooth on the move with neat hind action and well-carried tail. Very well-presented and handled, gave his best each time he appeared in the ring, eventually BPIS, well done 2. Newton’s Sylvabrae Make Me Smile, very much a baby at just six months this dark slate has much to like. A slightly old-fashioned type with excellent construction, sweet expression from darkest eyes, long well-carried tail. Scopey on the move for one so young, one I shall watch with interest 3. Hines’ Ramsgrove Rakowski, another promising dark slate baby just not as settled as my first two
PUPPY DOG (3) 1. Mangnall & Burfitt’s Breaksea G.I. Blues 2. Newton’s Sylvabae Make Me Smile 3. Fullerton & Gibson’s Bustroc Killiecrankie (TAF), shows promise but needs to settle
JUNIOR DOG (10, 2abs) 1. Peirson’s Alistair’s Kaiser Chief for Kiltondale (Imp) making his last outing as a Junior today. Good-sized dog hard to fault on construction and presentation, has a strong head with broad flat skull, well-arched neck flowing into strong back, good ribcage in both depth and length, correct croup and tailset. Has plenty of coat of the correct weatherproof texture, excels on the move and will always catch the eye, just would like to see him enjoying his showing a little more, sure this will come with maturity 2. Atkins & Charles’ Snikkles Sea Lavender JW, 13 ½ month old blue dog I have admired from the ringside, has a wealth of beautifully presented coat and happily a relatively clean face to show off his melting expression, eyes and pigmentation toning with coat. Under the coat he is well-made, correctly-bodied and muscled enabling him to move with elasticity and purpose. Loved him, shame I didn’t have two red cards 3. Barley’s Lochbarra Moon Walker, 14 month old slate at the pale stage, uncannily like his sire with the same exceptionally nice head and kind expression. Presented in fit hard condition, and with a harsh weatherproof jacket on its way looked a dog very capable of a day’s work if necessary, another with much to like
YEARLING DOG (13, 2abs) 1. Peirson’s Alistair’s Kaiser Chief for Kiltondale (Imp) 2. Bland’s Kiandra Kashmir 20 months slate dog of good bone, coat and substance and clearly enjoying his time in the ring. When settled, he moved with long effortless strides. Should mature into a nice dog 3. Gibb’s Dychix Captain Jack, almost 2 year old dark slate of lovely breed type, in good coat for age. Much to like but today seemed a little subdued, just did enough to take this award in a very good class
NOVICE DOG (6) 1. Barley’s Lochbarra Moon Walker, third in the strong Junior class 2. Mangnall & Burfitt’s Breaksea G.I. Blues 3. Aughey’s Lochbarra Dark Shadow for Aughenaird, rangy masculine-looking slate dog of good size and length, has lots of maturing to do but should finish well, sound and well-constructed, moved out well
DEBUTANT DOG (6) 1. Cook’s Mostonbrae Angel of Love, 3 year slate dog of nice type and in good coat. Could do to be fitter which would improve his topline and could then compete with a fair chance in higher classes, worth the effort 2. Mangnall & Burfitt’s Breaksea G.I.Blues 3. Aughey’s Lochbarra Dark Shadow for Aughenaird
GRADUATE DOG (8) 1. Gibbs’ Dychix Captain Jack, looking a bit happier in this class and appealed on the final move round, well done 2. Drummond & Forrest’s Kiltondale Mid-Knight, top-size very striking dark slate and white, very well-presented, Just a little untidy on the move today 3. Cook’s Mostonbrae Angel of Love
POST-GRADUATE DOG (8) 1. Felton’s Kittistone Sea Lord, 2 ½ years light slate I have judged before and still has the outline which appealed. Nice make and shape, masculine without coarseness, moved freely and lightly. Though a touch proud of his tail at times he won this class with ease 2. Cook’s Mostonbrae Angel of Love 3. Daniels’ Reaosh Hey Cisco, lively dog with a gorgeous rich red-brown coat. Would have preferred him a size larger
MID-LIMIT DOG (5) 1. Gill & Cook’s Ramsgrove Homeward Bound to Gillaber JW ShCM, 3 year old blue, not a big dog but very balanced. Good head with flat skull, eye tones with coat, very well-presented as all the dogs from this kennel were. Won this class on his free flowing movement, a pleasure to watch him go round. 2. Cook’s Mostonbrae Angel of Love 3. Broadbridge’s Sallen Harrar, 5 year old darkest brown with wonderful eye colour to tone. Rangy old-fashioned type with correct harsh coat, good bone and condition, lots of appeal
LIMIT DOG (5) 1. Brown’s Highglade Archangel, a 4 year old biggish slate of quality that has to be handled to be fully appreciated as he is not the flashiest of dogs. Has a masculine balanced head with dark eyes giving kindly expression, and is strongly made throughout without coarseness. Nice reach of neck, well-laid shoulders, ribcage both deep and long, neat hocks, well-set and carried tail. A very honest dog shown in fit hard condition, today was his day, and he went home with the CC, hope the other two aren’t long in coming. Also Best Opposite Sex in Show 2. Fox & Farrier’s Bushblades Transaction JW, another dog I have always liked, not the biggest but he has such a look of his sire who is a favourite of mine. Built on flowing lines and again very correct from nose to tail, he put in a foot-perfect performance and pushed the winner hard 3. Nicholls-Ward & Perry’s Bumbleridge’s Orinoko JW, handsome dark slate, nice size and length, lots to like though just a bit unsettled today, completed a trio of quality males
OPEN DOG (5) A small but quality class 1. Jellie’s Jellwell Juke Box Jury, 6 year old plainish slate dog I have judged before. Possibly he is easily overlooked as he is so understated but he has excellent breed type without any exaggerations, ideal size and bodily proportions. Attractive head with expressive eyes, good pigmentation and strong muzzle. Just a nice amount of body-hugging coat with that old-fashioned slight wave, and due to his good construction has the ability to cover the ground tirelessly as a true working dog should. Today however he could just not match the Limit class winner for fitness and condition and had to settle for the Res CC 2. Harcourt-Brown’s Ch Orora’s Mercury JW, at only two years old this boy still has some finishing off to do coatwise but he is already very impressive with a glorious head and expression. Very fit, showed his socks off demonstrating reachy movement and great ring presence, not surprised to see he has already done so much winning 3. Nicholls-Ward’s Ch Bumbleridge’s Naughty ‘n’ Nice JW ShCM, flashy slate/white rising 4 years, another I have judged before and he has matured into a striking adult, slightly heavier-looking than the first two due to his very dense coat, underneath it he is fit and well-made. Another with a lovely head and expression
VETERAN DOG (4) 1. Buchanan-Hislop’s Ch Ciopar Razzle’s Boy JW, 7 year old very attractive mid-slate with the best of heads and carrying just the right amount of correct-textured coat. A free active mover and beautifully presented 2. Bisset’s Gillaber Castle Fraser, handsome 9 ½ year dark slate of somewhat old-fashioned type, not quite so free on the move as my winner but still lots to like 3. Jemmett’s Thymewinds Midwinter Magic at Westbere, almost 10 years old, happy and exuberant dog with super dark eyes giving melting expression. Very solidly muscled and fit for his age
SPECIAL VINTAGE DOG (2) 1. Dumbrell & Lindsay’s Bethlynlee Bannock ShCM, nice type 10 ½ year old dark brown in great coat and very lively, carrying his years lightly. Especially liked his head and expression, a dog with much charisma 2. Aughey’s Aughenaird Clyde’s Double, 11 ½ year old dark slate of old-fashioned workmanlike type and good body condition, calm and steady on the move
SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG – No entries
SPECIAL OPEN DOG (2, 1abs) 1. Buchanan-Hislop’s Ch Ciopar Celtic Razzle’s Boy JW
MINOR PUPPY BITCH (5) A difficult class to judge with different types and stages of development 1. Evans’ Bustroc Poosie Nansie very pretty slate of 6 months. Good body and coat for age and moved well once settled, most promising 2. Broadbridge’s Sallen Ruby, another very attractive baby that I could have happily taken home, an old-fashioned brown. Moved very well for her age as her construction suggested she would 3. Thorpe’s Merrythorpe Miss Sunshine 8 months pretty brown in excellent coat not fully co-operating with her handler and seemed unsettled
PUPPY BITCH (5) 1. Nicholl-Ward’s Bumbleridge’s Lacy Locket, 10 months brown at the pale stage, very feminine and in excellent coat and body for age. Pretty head and a willing co-operative showgirl who gave of her best both standing and on the move RBPIS 2. Fox & Farrier’s Bushblades Seaquil for Kayanarra., 11 months slate with lovely pigmentation and dark eyes. Smooth on the move once settled 3. Thorpe’s Merrythorpe Miss Sunshine
JUNIOR BITCH (11) 1. Hosie’s Gillaber Balnacara at Aliskye JW, 17 months quality youngster at the pale stage. Nice head with sweet expression. Lovely for size, good length and proportions. Good in front and forechest. Happy and fluent on the move, topped a good class today, well done 2. Atkins & Charles’ Snikkles Blueberry Tart, blue of 13 ½ months with very sweet expression and excellent coat texture, beautifully presented 3. Edwards’ Nellbrook Just An Illusion, 16 months bigger type bitch, very shapely, built on flowing lines. In good coat, moved and showed well to complete a trio of most promising young bitches
YEARLING BITCH (11, 2 abs) 1. Whelan & Young’s Geliland Musical Breeze at Corimist, 20 months flashy dark slate and white bitch really coming into her own now. Good head, feminine with flat skull, dark eyes with pigmentation to match. Balanced angulation, well-muscled and fit, so fluent on the move, should mature into a stunning bitch 2. Whelan, Young & Lewis’ Potterdale Cloudberry, another very attractive and free-moving exhibit just a couple of months younger, lovely type of bitch with correct conformation and great ring presence, one I am sure will do well in the future, but today had sadly left most of her clothes at home so had to give way to her kennelmate 3. Harkin’s Claudalla Jenny Wren JW, feminine slate, nice size and beautifully presented, looked a picture standing but seemed reluctant to move out freely today
NOVICE BITCH (9) 1. Atkins & Charles’ Snikkles Blueberry Tart 2. Nicholls-Ward’s Bumbleridge’s Lacey Locket 3. Fox & Farrier’s Bushblades Seaquil for Kayanarra
DEBUTANT BITCH (11) 1. Whelan & Young’s Geliland Musical Breeze at Corimist 2. Atkins & Charles’ Snikkles Blueberry Tart 3. Nicholls-Ward’s Bumbleridge’s Lacey Locket
GRADUATE BITCH (6) 1. Hards’ Braemoray Isle of Gigha JW, 2 years slate bitch of lovely type. Good reach of neck flowing into lovely topline. Coat is coming along nicely and she was beautifully presented and handled, easy to see why she has done well and sure she will continue her winning ways 2. Brown’s Highglade Blue Angel, 2 year feminine blue with just a nice length of correct textured coat, good overall size and proportions and a particularly sweet face 3. Kemp’s Kiltondale Nice Try for Scalbeck , 2 year old tricolour bitch, very honest type with good deep chest and well muscled body, nice harsh coat coming through
POST-GRADUATE BITCH (11, 2abs) Such a nice class 1. Buchanan-Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Chancer, I have not come across this bitch before and she was quite my find of the day. At 2 years old she still has some finishing off to do in coat, though the texture is excellent, but all other essentials are in place for a quality bitch without exaggeration. Balanced head, well-carried on good reach of neck, firm topline, well-moulded croup. Lovely balance both standing and on the move, she reached out well in front matched by hind drive from neat pushy hocks. I shall watch her career with interest, on today’s showing she took a well-deserved Res CC and eventually RBIS 2. Murray-Walker’s Douglasdale Dream Angel of Walkerbrae, 2 ½ year old striking dark brown, beautifully proportioned and moved out well, pushed the class winner hard 3. Barley’s Braemoray Strathspey at Runival, 4 year old bitch I have always liked for her pretty head, balanced construction and soundness. Should also mention she is an object lesson for those who need to understand “lean, hard condition”, other exhibitors should take note!
MID-LIMIT BITCH (6) 1. Peirson’s Menander Temptation To Kiltondale JW, dark slate bitch rising 3 years old, very feminine with sweet expression, in good coat and well-presented to make the most of her charms. Moved smoothly and neatly, in total harmony with her handler at all times, lovely to watch 2. Hines’ Ramsgrove Ramblin’ Rose, bigger type brown, strongly made with profuse coat of excellent texture. Free and active on the move 3. Cook’s Barkly Destiny’s Child, pretty slate of almost 3 years, has all the essentials but needs more schooling in ringcraft
LIMIT BITCH (9, 1abs) 1 Jemmett’s Westbere Whisper JW ShCM , slate of 3 years, very sound and fit with great coat texture, lovely to see the “slight wave” which is tending to disappear from the show Beardie coats. One that would do a day’s work but looking equally at home in the show ring. Has style and showmanship, looked good on the move and will always be in the reckoning 2. Robinson’s Kiltondale Magnetism Ir. Jun. Ch. 2 ½ years darker slate in good coat, slightly heavier type but still very feminine, moved very well covering the ground with minimum effort 3. Fiedler’s Saskyadu Magical Moonlight at Malarky, attractive 3 ½ year dark slate in excellent coat. Moved well when she settled, quite a character
OPEN BITCH (9) Quality in depth in this class 1. Moffat’s Kyleca Spring Breeze JW, at 5 years this blue bitch is coming to her best having been slow to mature. Pretty head, most correct construction giving flowing lines, the whole completed with a nice amount of body-hugging weatherproof coat. Superb on the move when she really comes into her own, floating on long reachy strides, the more she moved the better she looked, outmoved all the rest to take this class and eventually the Bitch CC and BIS 2. Edward’s Ch Nellbrook Mystification JW, very attractive 5 year slate bitch I have always admired. Sweetest expression, correct thoughout, coat in good order and fluent on the move, a worthy Ch 3. Gault’s Ch Osmart Maid in Black by Sioux for Lochbarra, completed a trio of superb 5 year old bitches, another long lean type with figure-hugging coat, powerful on the move
VETERAN BITCH (5, 3 abs) Two lovely bitches in great condition, credit to their owners 1. Harkin’s Ch Claudalla Lady Tippins, elegant slate I have always liked, has a sweet feminine expression, well-balanced and ideal size with an excellent outline. Moved out today as well as I have ever seen her to take this class and eventually BVIS 2. Hards’ Braemoray Benvannoch JW, plainly marked slate of excellent breed type, has darkest eyes giving sweet expression, well-presented and enthusiastic show girl
SPECIAL VINTAGE BITCH (7, 2 abs) 1. Gill & Cook’s Ch Gillaber Drumoak 10 years dark slate bitch still in great shape and with an excellent coat, moving out well and enjoying her showing 2. Barley’s Ch Runival Dream of Peace, another 10 years young, with a very sweet head and expression, sadly lacking undercoat today 3 Paterson’s Gallus Drop Dead Gorgeous JW, happy 12 year slate, showing well and still in good coat for age
SPECIAL BEGINNERS BITCH (2) 1. Walker’s Treebeards Highlands 13 months slate at her and her owner’s first show and rather over-excited making her difficult to assess. Has a nice broad head and a wealth of coat, took this class on maturity, hope some help is forthcoming re grooming and ringcraft for this team 2. Innes’ Summer Apple, sweet brown baby who needs to grow on and acquire some ringcraft too, she seems very bright and is not shy so should pick up the skills easily
SPECIAL OPEN BITCH 1. Buchanan-Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Chancer 2. Ballantyne’s Ch Bustroc Ae Fond Kiss, classy brown bitch I have always liked, shown in beautiful coat and condition, would prefer a touch more animation 3. Jemmett’s Westbere Whisper JW ShCM
