BEARDED COLLIE CLUB OF SCOTLAND

OPEN SHOW - 1.3.08

My thanks to the members and committee of the BCC of Scotland for the invitation to judge this show and their hospitality. I was pleased with the quality of the entry and found some promising youngsters and was grateful to get my hands on a number of champions I have admired from the ringside. Presentation was in the main good although some would have benefited from attention to the cleanliness of their teeth.

SPECIAL VINTAGE DOG (1)

1. Bisset's Runival Ruthven. 12yr old slate in very good condition for his age. Strong head of nice proportions, nice expression, dark eye. Nice reach of neck, shoulder placement and angulation OK. Good depth of rib, strong loin. Balanced on the move.

VETERAN DOG (2)

1. Aughey's Aughenaird Clydes Double. 9 yr old dark slate who I have judged before and still in good form. Nice overall proportions. Quite balanced on the move. Won this class on his better head shape and proportions. Strong square skull with good width of muzzle, dark eye giving kind, gentle expression. Prefered his shoulder placement and angulation to 2 and this gave him better reach when moving.

2. Bisset's Gillaber Castle Fraser. 8yr old slate. Not quite the overall proportions and balance of 1.

MINOR PUPPY DOG (2)

1. Griffiths Silene Kingfisher Blue. 8mth old dark slate. Promising puppy who is a nice shape and developing on the right lines. Masculine head, nice dark eye. Nice length of neck, good shoulder placement and angulation. Good depth and length of rib, strong loin. Coat texture and length approriate for his age. In good condition for his age and will watch his progress with interest. On the move, once he settled, he showed the reach, drive and balance his construction suggested he was capable of.

2. Daniels Reaosh Hey Cisco. 8mth old brown. Lacking the maturity, size and masculinity of 1. Smaller size who needs to grow on and body up. Head lacked the strength and proportions of 1 , eye colour needs to darken. One who would benefit from time and better body condition.

PUPPY DOG (6,2)

1. Forrest & Drummond's Kiltondale Mid-Knight. Eye catching 10mth old dark slate. Oozes masculinity, well grown and in excellent condition for his age. Won this class on his conformation, maturity and confidence. Nice head proportions, flat skull, good width of muzzle, correct bite. Would like his eye to darken although acceptable at this age and he has a soft expression. Nice length of neck, shoulder placement and angulation good, rib of correct shape with good depth and length. Strong loin, well set tail and firm topline. Coat of nice texture and length to complete the picture of a promising puppy. He was presented and handled to advantage and moved confidently showing a ground covering stride. Won this class on maturity and more positive movement. Best Puppy in Show

2. Griffiths Silene Kingfisher Blue. Unlucky to meet 1 who had the advantage of a couple of months which showed in maturity and confidence, partciularly on the move.

JUNIOR DOG ( 3,1)

1. Kiltondale Mid-Knight

2. McTaggart's Loch Lomond Laddie. 11mth old brown enjoying his day out and making his handler work hard. Head proportions not as good as 1, more length of muzzle than I like. Eye colour needs to darken to soften his expression. Neck of nice length, shoulder placement and angulation OK, good length of rib. His movement was difficult to assess as he was quite erratic on the move.

SPECIAL YEARLING DOG (6,2)

1. Durrant's Brathens Cooter Crofter. 20mth old slate. Liked his overall shape and proportions. Has a masculine head of good proportions, nice dark eye, correct bite. He has well placed shoulders and good angulation, a nice depth and length of rib, strong loin, correct tailset, and rear angulation balanced with the front. On the move he was a bit unsettled but he was able to show enough of the balanced ground covering movement he is capable of to win this class.

2. Cook's Mostonbrae Angel of Love. 22mth old slate. Lost out in this class to the better balance and overall proportions of 1.

MAIDEN DOG (2,1)

1. Silene Kingfisher Blue

NOVICE DOG (3,1)

1. Kiltondale Mid-Knight

2. Silene Kingfisher Blue

DEBUTANT DOG (3,1)

1. Silene Kingfisher Blue

2. Mostonbrae Angel of Love

UNDERGRADUATE DOG (8, 3)

1. Gill & Cook's Ramsgrove Homeward Bound to Gillaber. 2yr old blue. Liked his overall shape and proportions, would prefer it if he was a size larger all through as this would define his masculinity and give him more ring presence. Nice head proportions, good eye colour for a blue, correct bite. Nice length of neck, shoulder placement and angulation Ok, good depth and length of rib. Shown in good condition and moved with a free, ground covering stride.

2. Brathens Cooter Crofter

GRADUATE DOG ( 2)

1. Brathens Cooter Crofter

2. Bayne & Florquin's Brathens Cooter Commotion. 20mth old brown. Litter brother to 1. Nice head proportions, would prefer a darker eye. Prefered the layback and angulation of shoulder of 1. Good length of rib. Coat texture correct. A bit unsettled on the move and lifting his tail which interfered with his ability to show off his movement to its full advantage.

POST GRADUATE DOG ( 2)

1. Paterson's Ciopar Just The Ticket @ Gallus. 2yr old dark slate. Another I would prefer to be a size larger all through, having said that he is nicely in proportion and well balanced. Head of nice proportions, lovely expression and dark eye, correct bite. Neck of good length, shoulder placement and angulation are fine. Good length of rib, strong loin and holds a firm topline. Rear angulation and length of hock fine. Disappointed on the move as has a tendancy to raise his tail which restricts a free flowing movement.

2. Stott's Mobuff Kashmir. 4yr old dark slate. Lost out in this and previous classes as would prefer a stronger head and better layback and angulation of shoulder. He has a nice expression and good length, depth and shape of rib.

MID-LIMIT DOG ( 3,2)

1. Broadbridge's Sallen Harrar. 4yr old brown. Although he had come out without his best jacket what he did have was a lovely dark brown with a nice harsh texture. Good eye colour for a brown giving a soft, inquisitive expression. Head and body proportions fine. Good length, depth and shape of rib, strong loin and holds a level topline both standing and on the move. Moved well.

LIMIT DOG (3,1)

1. Elliott's Kyleca Signs of Spring. Both 4yr olds in this class but 1 in full coat and 2 needing to grow his jacket back. Prefered the overall strength of 1 who had a head of better proportions with a broader skull and better width of muzzle. He could benefit from being fitter as with the weight he is currently carrying over his shoulders he can have a tendency to roll on the move and distract from his movement. I felt his overall qualities placed him above 2 as, hopefully, fitness is something his owner can rectify.

2. Sallen Harrar

OPEN DOG (3)

1. Buchanan-Hislop's Ch Ciopar Celtic Razzle's Boy. One I have watched from a puppy who has developed into a worthy champion. Judging him today, for the 1st time, I was not disappointed in his conformation and movement. For me he has the outline I look for in Beardie with the parts flowing smoothly into each other covered in a jacket of the right length and texture - giving a look of masculinity and elegance with no coarseness . When you put your hands on him you can really appreciate the qualities of this dog. He has a head with a broad flat skull, good width of muzzle which is of the correct length. Dark eyes toning well with his coat colour. He has a nice length of neck flowing into well placed shoulders which are well angulated. He has a good depth and length of rib of the correct shape and a strong loin which enables him to maintain a level topline both standing and on the move. On the move his conformation translates into a free flowing movement which covers the ground without much effort and indicates he could do a days work without tiring himself out in the 1st hour. A pleasure to judge him and to award him Best Dog & Best In Show.

2. Ballantyne & Burns Ch Bustroc Drouthy Cronie. Another worthy champion that it was a priviledge to judge. Much of the same comments as 1 apply but prefered the more flowing outline and head proportions of 1. Presented and handled to advantage. Pleased to award him Res Best Dog.

SPECIAL VINTAGE BITCH (4,1)

1. Johnston's Ch Potterdale Anna-Belle. 11yr old slate bitch shown in excellent condition for her age. Well presented and sympathetically handled. Nice head with melting expression from her dark eyes. Good reach of neck. Layback and angulation of shoulder fine. Good depth and length of rib. She won this class with her freer movement showing good reach and drive. Best Special Vintage in Show

2. Delaney's Arranbrae Just By Chance. 14 yr old dark slate in wonderful coat for her age. Liked her overall shape and proportions. In good order for her age but carrying a bit more weight than I'm sure she did her in her prime but then I think we all fill out as we get on in years, so who am I to deny her her treats.

VETERAN BITCH (2)

1. Barley's Ch Runival Dream of Peace. 8 yr old dark slate of very nice type and proportions showed in lovely condition. Liked her head properties and width of muzzle. Very dark eyes giving a kind, melting expression. Nice length of neck, well placed and agulated shoulders, good depth and length of rib, strong loin, correct tailset and low hocks. She moved well showing good reach and drive and this smoother, freeing action secured her the class. Best Veteran In Show

2. Ch Pottedale Anna-Belle

MINOR PUPPY BITCH (2,1)

1. Griffiths Silene Winnie The Blue Witch. On her own but a worthy winner, litter sister to Minor Puppy Dog winner and of the same type. 8 mth old dark slate of nice type and overall proportions. Good head proportions, dark eye and providing the right balance between strength and femininity. Shoulders well placed and angulated. Good depth and length of rib. Strong loin and in excellent condition for her age. Moved well and with confidence showing a free and easy action. One for the future if she continues to develop along these lines. Reserve Best Puppy In Show

PUPPY BITCH (2,1)

1. Silene Winnie The Blue Witch

JUNIOR BITCH

1. Pierson's Menander Temptation To Kiltondale. 14mth old dark slate showed and presented to her best advantage. Liked her overall size and proportions. Feminine head with a soft, enquiring expression and nice head proportions. Good length of neck, well placed and angulated shoulders. Ribs of good depth and length, strong loin, correct tailset. Her handler gets the best out of her on the move when she covers the ground with ease showing good reach and drive.

2. Buchanan-Hislop's Ciopar Celtic Chancer. Liked the quality of this 12 mth old bitch. Nice size, proportions and overall type. Prefered the more relaxed and ground covering movement of 1.

SPECIAL YEARLING BITCH (8,1)

1. Menader Temptation To Kiltondale.

2. Johnston's Potterdale Star Of Peebles. 18mth old slate. Nice head and expression, good length and depth of rib. Coat of good texture and length for her age. Well handled and presented. Lost out to 1 on her more positive, ground covering movement.

MAIDEN BITCH (8,5)

1. Silene Winnie The Blue Witch

2. Ciopar Celtic Chancer

NOVICE BITCH (8,4)

1. Silene Winnie The Blue Witch

2. Ciopar Celtic Chancer

DEBUTANT BITCH (3,1)

1. Silene Winnie The Blue Witch

2. Ciopar Celtic Chancer

UNDERGRADUATE BITCH (5,2)

1. Potterdale Star Of Peebles

2. Laing's Bustroc Kissin My Kate. 22 mth old slate. Good overall body proportions, nice head and expression. Moved well. Prefered the body shape, outline and movement of 1.

POST GRADUATE BITCH ( 4,1)

1. Barley's Braemoray Strathspey @ Runival. 2yr old slate who won this class on her shoulder placement and angulation which translated into a free effortless and ground covering movement. Nice head and expression, dark eye. Nice overall body shape and proportions. Presented and handled well, best mover in the class.

2. Patterson's Gallus Living The Dream. Unfortunate to meet 1. Larger type of bitch than winner but still feminine and nicely in proportion. Nice head shape and dark eye.

MID LIMIT BITCH (3,1)

1. Gault's Osmart Maid In Black By Soiux For Lochbarra. Attractive slate bitch of nice type. Loved her overall proportions even though her handler at times doesn't assist her to show them to advantage. Nice strong but feminine head with lovely expression and dark eyes. Neck of good length, shoulder placement and angulation fine, good depth, length and shape of rib. Correct tailset and low hocks. Moved well showing good reach and drive. Reserve Best Bitch

2. Moffat's Kyleca Spring Breeze. Another nice type of bitch more strongly made than 1. Nice head and expression. Nice length of neck, shoulder placement and angulation fine and good depth and length of rib. Could lose some weight to her advantage and this told in her movement which wasn't as free as 1.

LIMIT BITCH (3,1)

1. Osmart Maid In Black By Soiux For Lochbarra

2. Gilchrist's Romegs Repertiore. 6yr old dark slate bitch. Lost out here to a bitch whose overall construction and movement were superior. Nice overall shape.

OPEN BITCH (3,1)

1. Pierson's Ch Kiltondale Miss Dynamite. Lovely bitch who is a worthy champion. Handled and presented to advantage. She excels in head, neck, shoulder placement and angulation. Good depth and length of rib, strong loin. Moving she maintains a level topline and presents a picture of effortless and positive movement. She was a pleasure to watch and judge. In the challenge for Best of Breed felt the dog had better body length and proportions. Best Bitch & Reserve Best In Show

2. Ballantyne & Burns Ch Bustroc Ae Fond Kiss. Brown bitch of nice type. Good head shape and eye colour for a brown. Nice length of neck, shoulder and placement and angulation fine, good length and dept of rib, strong level topline. Moved well but couldn't match the reach and drive of 1.
