The Bearded Collie Club of Scotland Open Show – Saturday 2nd March 2019
Judge - Colleen Stead (Clovabrae)

I would like to thank the Bearded Collie Club of Scotland for inviting me to judge their Open Show which was my second Breed Club appointment and one that I have very much been looking forward to. The Scottish Club shows always have such a friendly atmosphere and it was the same for this show where I received a warm welcome from the committee and exhibitors alike. Thank you to my excellent ring steward, Dick Morrison for keeping the ring running smoothly. Thanks also to all the exhibitors who entered their lovely Beardies and I sincerely hope you enjoyed your day too.

DOGS:

Special Vintage Dog
No Entries

Veteran Dog (2,0)
1st - Handley’s Ch Bargemon Baryshnikov at Barkenbear JW ShCM
I have judged this boy before when he was a youngster and now at 8 years old he is still an impressive dog. He has a strong masculine head with a dark eye and gentle expression. He has good front angulation with good depth of chest and prominent forechest, good length of rib. He is in fit bodily condition and moved effortlessly around the ring with a firm, level topline, strong hindquarters. Best Veteran in Show
2nd - Handley’s Bargemon Beauford Tourer at Barkenbear ShCM
9 year old brown who has a good head, with broad flat skull, good stop and strength of foreface. Correct mouth with broad underjaw. Moderate front with good depth of chest. Well muscled and in excellent coat and condition.

Minor Puppy Dog (1,0)
1st - Kuz’s Duncannas Special Edition
6 month old dark slate. Good head with nice eye and cheeky expression, correct mouth and good pigment. Moderate neck leads to good front angulation, good length of rib and nice hind angulation which all comes together very well when he moves. If he can move like this at this tender age I look forward to seeing what he can do when he is older. Well handled and presented. Best Puppy Dog

Puppy Dog (2,0)
1st - Kuz’s Duncannas Special Edition
2nd - McAdam's Megamaree Summer Solstice
9 ½ months old, he is a nice shapely puppy with a good head and dark eye. Very unsettled to be gone over and a little erratic on the move but I would encourage his owners to definitely persist with ringcraft as there is lots to like about him, he just needs to settle.

Junior Dog
No Entries

Yearling Dog (3,0)
1st - Harcourt-Brown’s Orora’s The Emperor
20 month old slate, lovely shapely outline and of nice size. Lovely head and dark eye, good pigment and dentition. Great layback of shoulder and good upperarm which allows him to extend on the move. Correct shape of rib which was also of good length. His hindquarters are well angulated with low hocks which drive him forwards on the move.
2nd - Savage & McLean’s Talraz Comic Relief at Canaich JW
Nearly two years old dark slate, good masculine head, dark eye and super pigment. Broad underjaw and correct bite. Good front angulation which again he uses very well on the move. At the moment he needs to deepen in chest but this will come with maturity I’m sure. Adequate hind angulation that he uses well once on the move. He drops into himself and lengthens when moving – lots to like about him.
3rd - Daly’s Orora’s Embellished
Slightly smaller in stature than 1st & 2nd and another with a good head and eye colour. Free stands very well showing off his lovely shape. Adequate angulation fore and aft. He moved steadily around the ring but I got the impression there was another gear there if needed - In beautiful condition and well handled.

Maiden Dog (2,1)
1st - McAdam’s Megamaree Summer Solstice
Second in Puppy Dog - a little more settled this time and glimpses of sound positive movement.

Novice Dog (2,1)
1st - McAdam’s Megamaree Summer Solstice

Debutant Dog
No Entries

Undergraduate Dog (1,0)
1st - Daly’s Orora’s Embellished

Graduate Dog (2,0)
1st - Costello’s Bradiba’s Brilliant Nutmeg Muffin at Calkylona (Imp Deu)
2 year old brown who presents a shapely balanced outline. Good head with correct stop, eye colour tones with coat, correct mouth. Good layback of shoulder with excellent upper arm, deep chest, prominent forechest and excellent length of rib. Impressive on the move, he covers the ground with ease.
2nd - Ryan & Black’s Dychix Samuel Whiskers with Razkal
Masculine and heavier built throughout than 1st this dark slate boy has a super head. Adequate angulation front and rear with great depth of chest and super length of rib. Overall he creates a nice outline. Unfortunately he was a little unsettled on the move and gave his handler a hard time.

Post Graduate Dog (2,1)
1st - Henderson’s Scalbeck Sirius over Shorndene
3 year old slate with lovely broad flat skull, good mouth and pigment. Strongly made throughout, level topline that he held on the move, in excellent coat and condition.

Mid Limit Dog (4,0)
1st - Roberston’s Arranbrae Laird of Quothquan JW
Dark slate of ideal size who presents a lovely balanced outline on the stand with a strong topline. Good head, correct stop and lovely dark eye and expression. His neck leads to correct layback and a good upperarm, deep chest, correct shape of rib, short loin and well muscled hindquarters which enabled his light and effortless movement around the ring.
2nd - Gamble’s Talraz Look To The Future at Capelaw ShCM
6 year old with an impressive masculine head with the darkest of eyes. Good mouth and excellent pigmentation. Nice layback and return of upperarm, good forechest. Well muscles hindquarters. Would prefer a longer rib. On the move he extended well but preferred the overall balance of 1st.
3rd - Handley’s Invercoyle Caperdonich at Barkenbear
5 year old blue with a lovely head and eye colour matching coat. Good mouth and dentition. His neck leads to good layback and upperarm, strong topline that he holds on the move. Moved well around the ring but just lacks that finish of 1st & 2nd.

Limit Dog (1,0)
1st - Buchanan- Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Little Bear
3 year old slate with a nice masculine head with good eye colour, stop and strength of foreface. His neck leads to a good shoulder and one of the best upperarms of the day. Good depth of chest with prominent forechest. Well angulated rear with pushy hocks. I liked him for his overall balance and his movement which was effortless although I don’t think he was 100% settled today.

Open Dog (5,2)
1st - Glasgow’s JB De Chester at Gallus
A dog I have watched from the ringside and so was looking forward to getting my hands on him today. He is masculine and presents a lovely balanced outline. Strong head and good eye colour, broad underjaw and correct dentition. Great layback of shoulder, deep chest and good forechest. Correct shape and length of rib. Well angulated and muscled hindquarters – he won this class on his effortless movement with superb reach and drive. Best Dog & Best Opposite Sex
2nd - Delaney’s Arranbrae Muy Guapo JW
Dark slate who again I have admired from the ringside and he has matured into an impressive dog. Lovely typical profile standing, with good height to length proportions. Excellent layback of shoulder and good upperarm. Depth and length of rib correct, short loin and well angulated rear, correct tail set and carriage. I don’t think the inside ring suited him today as he could not quite match to movement of 1st nevertheless a lovely Beardie. Reserve Best Dog
3rd - Gibb’s Snikkles Bluebeard at Pirateer JW ShCM ShCEx
This blue boy is maturing well since I last saw him – lovely head and pigment and gentle expression. His moderate neck led to a good front with a matching hindquarter that enabled him to move with purpose around the ring. Just not the depth of chest and length of rib as first two but this will probably change as he matures further.

BITCHES:

Special Vintage Bitch (1,0)
1st - Hosie’s Ch Gillaber Balnacara at Aliskye JW
11 year old slate with a feminine head with the darkest of eyes giving a melting expression. Correct mouth and excellent pigment. Moderate neck to neat front assembly. Correct shape and length of rib. Good hind angulation and low hocks. Moved out really nicely, in excellent coat and condition. Best Special Vintage

Veteran Bitch (4,0)
1st - Robertson’s Kiltondale Liadhich with Quothquan ShCM
7 year old dark slate of excellent proportions. Strong but feminine head, dark eye, correct mouth and pigment. Elegant neck into excellent front, deep chest, strong topline and length coming from rib. Her free flowing movement won her the class, very nice bitch.
2nd - Peart’s Talluarchy Angel Wings ShCM
8 year old pretty bitch of correct proportions. Feminine head, good eye and correct bite. Her neck flowed into her good front, level topline and well angulated rear which allowed her to move with ease around the ring.
3rd - Delaney’s Arranbrae Just One Look JW
7 year old feminine girl who presents a lovely outline, good head with dark eye and sweet expression. Well constructed throughout and in lovely coat and condition – just couldn’t match the movement of 1st and 2nd today.

Minor Puppy Bitch (2,0)
1st - Harcourt-Brown’s Orora’s The Heroine
Smashing dark slate puppy of correct proportions – super head and dark eye, lovely front and rear angulation, good depth of chest for one so young and good length of rib. Moved out with confidence.
2nd - Harcourt-Brown’s Orora’s Velveteen
Brown sister to winner and another with lovely balanced proportions. Feminine head, good mouth, again a lovely front and rear angulation. Not as settled on the move as 1st but this will come and I’m sure they will swap places many times – two lovely pups.

Puppy Bitch (2,0)
1st - Glasgow’s Malandex Xpat’s Gem at Gallus
11 month old slate bitch with a fabulous outline. Lovely head and dark eye giving a cheeky expression. Lovely angles front and rear, great length of rib, strong topline, pushy low hocks and correct tail carriage. On the move she was so correct coming and going and her movement in profile was lovely to watch. Super puppy who I am sure will have a great future. Love her. Reserve Best Bitch, Reserve Best in Show and Best Puppy in Show.
2nd - Ballantyne’s Bustroc Rosebud
Another with a lovely shapely outline, finer made throughout than 1st, pretty head, correct bite and pigment. Good angulation front and rear which she used well on the move.

Junior Bitch (3,0)
1st - Gamble’s Talraz By Firelight To Capelaw
16 month old slate bitch at the pale stage. Good head with nice kind eye and expression. Excellent front, depth of chest and length of rib. Impressive on the move which won her the class.
2nd - Hosie & Gill’s Malandex French Xpectation for Gillaber
Very pretty bitch with a gorgeous head and dark eye in lovely coat and condition. Well constructed throughout but tended to lose her topline occasionally. Good on the move but at times a little hesitant.
3rd - Jemmett’s Philemon Keltic Magic for Westbere (Imp Deu)
Different in type to 1st & 2nd. 16 months old, slate with a good head with broad flat skull, shapely with matching angles front and rear. Moved out well with an easy stride.

Undergraduate Bitch (3,1)
1st - Hosie & Gill’s Malandex French Xpectation for Gillaber
2nd - Gamble’s In Vogue Island Miss France at Capelaw
Nearly 3 years old dark slate, well up to size. Broad flat skull with dark eye. Good front and deep chest, level topline standing and on the move, good hind angulation. Was very happy with herself and gave her handler a hard time but moved out well.

Graduate Bitch (4,0)
1st - Gamble’s In Vogue Island Miss France at Capelaw (Imp Fra)
2nd - Walker & Muir’s Douglasdale Dream Island
2yr old shapely brown. Nice feminine head, moderate front and hind angulation with good depth of chest and length of rib. Tended to lose her topline whilst standing – movement was positive but just lacked front extension.
3rd - Higgins’ Innkalies Miss Marple at Alahoy
Dark slate and white bitch of larger size and substance. Lovely broad flat skull, good angles front and rear and well made throughout – just lacked momentum on the move.

Post Graduate Bitch (3,0)
1st - Moir’s Braemoor’s Fabulous Fenella at Winaria JW (Imp NLD)
2 year old dark slate bitch who is really looking the part and has matured beautifully. Feminine head with dark eye and melting expression. Lovely layback of shoulder and return of upper arm. Good in forechest and excellent length of rib. Well bent stifle and pushy hocks. She is balanced throughout with no exaggeration and what she has she uses well on the move. Very impressed by her. Best Bitch and Best in Show
2nd - Goodbrand’s Braesnobel Let Freedom Ring
2 year old shapely bitch of good proportions. Nice head, good dentition and pigment. Nicely made throughout and moved well with her handler although not quite the reach and drive of 1st – in good coat and condition.

Mid Limit Bitch

Limit Bitch (2,0)
1st - Wallis’ Bargemon Tosca
4 year old bitch with very good head and gentle expression. Good layback of shoulder and upperarm. Nice length of rib and solid strong topline. Her hind angulation along with her good front allowed her to move out with ease – well handled and presented.
2nd - Buchanan-Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Mine Alone
A very shapely bitch with a lovely head, dark eye and melting expression. Very good front, excellent forechest – level topline and well bent stifle with short hocks – just lacked positivity on the move today.

Open Bitch (4,1)
1st - Goodbrand’s Dychix Whistles and Bells at Braesnobel ShCM
5 year old dark slate bitch with pleasing head and dark eye. Good layback of shoulder and upper arm, correct length and shape of rib, adequate hind angulation. Moved well – excellent handling and presentation.
2nd - Delaney’s Arranbrae Just One Look JW
Third in Veteran.
3rd - Steel’s Invercoyle Erdradour
5 year old blue bitch in beautiful coat. Pleasing head and matching eye colour. Moderate neck into matching front and rear angulation – she is a sound honest bitch but was carrying a little too much weight which might have affected her topline today – however she moved well and on another day these girls could easily change places.
